Torchwood-Children of Earth alternate ??

Just wondering what your reaction would’ve been if the 456 had said they wanted 10% of our general population? Not just the children.

This may be premature, but it’s not a spoiler. I was just thinking about it.

It would probably not made as good tv, obviously, since most Torchwood episodes deal with practically losing some of the general population.

Depends if the human race got to choose which 10% would be sacrificed. I could see a situation where the world’s governments try to decide which tenth of the population was expendable. Would they decide based on economic potential? Ethnicity? Religion? Inability to fight back? If there’s any oil underneath them? :frowning:

I think if the ten percent to be singled out were not children, the impact of the 456’s demands would have a lot less, well, impact.

Assuming you’re not one of the 670 million who get given up. :frowning:

Yea i was thinking the same thing. If the 456 just said 10% of the population i think it would be a much easier choice. I would think the government would chose from the elderly…everyone about a certain age gets put into a lotto. I think the most acceptable choice would be by pure lotto. No one is exempt.

Take a look at the opposite end of an idea. In the movie Deep Impact the government has the ability to only save 10% of the population. Is it wrong for them to save 10&% and let the other 90% die. Should they all suffer. No. I think there is no other option but to sacrifice the 10% to save the 90% if you had no other option on the table. I know its horrible and the way they went about it is, what i think makes people so angry, but i do think the government made the right choice.

Now. They made a huge mistake with trying to cover things up and stopping Torchwood. The could have probably prevented things almost from the beginning but that goes against human nature. If you did something horrible in the past…something necessary but horrible, would you want people to know.

well, the prisons would be emptied, of course. And i think they still would’ve had “exempt” status. Would they really turn over Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, Russel T Davies, Joss Whedon etc?

I doubt that there would be such an outcry about just a random 10% of the population. Most countries could find a 10% of there citizens to sacrifice for the “Greater Good” the criminals , the homeless, the unwanted, the none productive.

Asking for adults is easier than asking for kids, but the roundtable arguments about who would have been the same. Prisoners alone couldn’t account for the number needed. So then you’d have a nasty decision to make, just like they did in the episode.
