Top (n=10) Geek Related Romantic Date Night Movies

It’s Date Night! Whether you’ve been married for 20 years or you are just dating there comes a time when date night consists of staying in and catching a movie. It could be storming out or maybe the car is in the shop or maybe you are staying within a budget. But you are a geek and your other half just isn’t into seeing that new mind bender, high-tech science fiction film or action comedy so what do you choose that both of you will have an enjoyable evening?

To help solve this issue and to prevent hours of needless bantering about what movie to watch I’ve put together a list of my top 10 suggested geek related date night films. The idea was to put together a list of romantic films that had some of the softer sides of geek-related content but without the harder geek related content. I’m sure there are others out there but these are my top 10 go to date movie for geeks.

  1. For Love Of The Game – One phrase says it all: “Clear the mechanism.” Kevin Costner and Space Camp’s Kelly Preston. Yes you read that right, Space Camp’s Kelly Preston.

  2. Bicentennial Man – Robin Williams wit, weighty Asimov issues and romance in one fantastic bundle. This could be my favorite movie of all time.

  3. Groundhog Day – Bill Murray’s transformation is worth the repeats and Andie MacDowell is a sweetie. Plus it’s good for any time of the year not just February 2nd!

  4. You’ve Got Mail – E-mail dating at its highest level. Tom Hanks may indeed be my favorite actor ever.

  5. Time Traveler’s Wife – Rachael McAdams deals with being in love with a Time Traveler

  6. 50 First Dates – Drew Barrymore teams up with Adam Sandler again in a hilarious comedy dealing with romance and daily memory loss.

  7. 17 Again – Matthew Perry becomes 17 again as Zac Efron to save his kids and his marriage. The Elven language and geek references by Thomas Lennon and Melora Hardin alone as worth seeing this movie.

  8. Mr. Destiny – John Belushi is married to Sarah Connor/NBC’s Chuck’s Mom in this star filled film about learning to love your life as is. And Rene Russo in pleather? Mmmmmm

  9. The Princess Bride – As you wish!

  10. What Women Want – Mel Gibson accidently is given the ability to actually hear what women are thinking as his life reaches critical points at work, with his daughter and with his romantic interest Helen Hunt. Plus Marisa Tomei’s best orgasm ever!

So feel free to try these out and let me know what you think. I’m sure you have other films that fit the mold too. Let us know what they are!

Posed this question to The GF.

Her: “Altered States!”

Me: o.0

I would probably add Stardust.

I would gladly second that!

What about Scott Pilgram? It is a love story…

My first date with my now wife was Pulp Fiction
A bold choice, but she enjoyed it.

One of ours was Star Wars Episode I. She’s still with me. Go figure!

Our first date movie was Mystery Men

Our first date movie : Fresh Horses. I don’t remember anything about the film except that remnants of the Brat Pack were in it. I just looked on IMDB and realized all the talent in that film. Holy Crom! Viggo was in the film!! We may have to check that out just for giggles.

Anywho, our next date was in her living room. She asked, “Have you ever seen Spinal Tap?” My response, “No.” Her face lit up. She turned on her heel and ran up the stairs. She returned with a tattered VHS box with the title of the film in Heavy Metal font. She popped it in the VCR and we laughed for the next 82 minutes.

No wonder you married her!

I didn’t realize until recently that my wife has never seen Spinal Tap. I’ve been coaxing her to watch it for months now.

I saw Spinal Tap in the theater when it came out and actually saw them in concert in the early 90s. Love that Spinal Tap.

I think our first movie together before we were dating was “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.” I know I made him see “Clerks” right after we started dating… I think our first actual go out to the movies date was… checks Wikipedia “The Life of David Gale.”

Oh I just recently saw “The Time Travelers Wife” and loved it. My husband wandered into the room about 20 minutes into the movie and was instantly hooked as well. He was totally intrigued with the unique time travel story line.

The same day we watched “The Replacement Bureau”. Matt Damon- dreamy sigh. Anyway, great premise, good acting, but somewhat of a let down at the end.

Good list, Shooter! I would add Sleepless in Seattle as well, although that could be too much of a chick flick for some.

Thank you Reg!!!

I had thought of adding Sleepless in Seattle but there’s no real geekiness or scifi in it. The romance in it might be a little better than You’ve Got Mail but the e-mail part of You’ve Got Mail in my opinion drives it into geekiness even though internet dating is now the #2 way to meet people in America now 2nd only to meeting through friends (via a recent match.com sponsored study by Dr Helen Fisher & others).

S and I saw Bruce Almighty on our first date. but we now have semi-regular movie-watching date afternoons and we generally watch geeky stuff. Like Super 8. Or for our 4th anniversary, we watched the original Tron, then watched Tron Legacy, and later that night watched Scott Pilgrim.

I would encourage people not to limit their idea of “date movies” to romantic comedies or whatever - pick something you both like! Sure there are times that you and your partner might really really want to see different things, but S and I are happiest when we watch a movie we’re both interested in, even if it’s neither of our first choices.

We currently have “The Adjustment Bureau” from Netflix but we just haven’t been feeling it the past few days. Its time will come…

I can’t believe I forgot to mention Somewhere in Time, it is one of my old guilty favorites. Even though there is a glaring paradox in it I still love the film, (It is a Richard Matheson story, go figure… :D). I watched it with one of my girlfriends decades ago and she loved it. I think she really liked Time after Time too if I remember correctly…

The Back to the Future trilogy could be considered quasi romantic/scifi too, both for the McFly’s (Marty and his Father) as well as Doc Brown.

First movie me and future wife attended was Tremors.

Not too romantic, but scifi enough

This was also another one on my short list. I decided against it because it was a little to action heavy. Still, an excellent choice.

The supernatural powers given to Bruce in this movie definitely qualify it for the category I was aiming for. Although I wouldn’t personally put it in my top 10 to replace anything. It was a quaint and funny movie to me but that was about it.

I would also wholeheartedly agree with you on picking movies that you both enjoy no matter what they are. For example Mrs Shooter and I often agree on inspirational movies like The Pursuit Of Happiness, The Blind Side, Miracle, Hoosiers, Invincible, Rudy, Bicentennial Man, or A League Of Their Own. But it really doesn’t matter what it is as long as you enjoy it together.

Most recently our dates to the movies have been to either very silly movies like The Hangover or Bridesmaids or, last summer, The Mrs. finally got me to sit down with her and watch all eight Harry Potter films (that was a lot of fun, I have to say).
