I’m seriously looking forward to this. I loved Thundercats so much when I was a kid, but the one time I watched an episode as an adult I was almost embarassed by the voice acting and animation, and I turned it off so as not to tarnish my memory.
Give me something else to build a new memory on, thank you!
You know, that’s an interesting thing I’ve noticed. There’s a new DVD from the guys at the Found Footage Festival, that takes a great look at old cartoons in one segment.
There’s a ton of cartoons out there, that I absolutely loved as a child, but upon revisiting them as an adult, they’re just a lot more…well, crappy, than I remember.
Even my all time favorite, TMNT, wasn’t immune from this. I recently saw an old episode playing in a video store, and thought, “Why the hell did I like this so much?”…I guess it goes to show what little kids really know about quality.
I’ve stayed away from the old Thundercats for this reason, not wanting to ruin anymore memories, like I did with He-Man and TMNT. I’m all for a new version of Thundercats, as a way to keep things fresh.
I even enjoyed the new He-Man, and thought no one really gave that one a chance.
When you are a child you don’t know any better… You haven’t anything else to complare it to, esspecially if all of the other shows are of the same mediocre quality.
I remember when some of my friends who loved Robotech came over to my house and watched the Macross motion picture, after viewing it they could’nt watch Robotech anymore. It had ruined it for them…
It is like eating realswiss chocolate for the first time, you can never go back to Hersheys.
This reminds me, I still need to finish the new animated He-Man to find out whether they resolved the Teela/Sorceress storyline. That episode was my favorite in the 80s. (Or could someone tell me using spoiler text?)
For Thundercats… I wonder who will do the animation. The “US broadcaster Cartoon Network revives ThunderCats with an anime flavour” line worries me somewhat. But, in fairness, I haven’t seen much American TV animation in recent years.
Set to slap you with distorted nostalgia in 2011, the updated story of a bunch of cat people fighting a mummy and some mutants will be animated by the Japanese studio that did The Animatrix and Batman: Gotham Knights, who will also reportedly be updating the looks of the characters–meaning Panthro might look like slightly less of a leather daddy this go.
I don’t think it helps that the voice acting up until, like, the late nineties for any animated show consisted of TALKING IN A SEMI-YELL. FOR EVERYTHING. I have the X-men animated series (still love it!) and while it’s better than a lot of the stuff from the 80s, CYCLOPS STILL TALKS IN CAPSLOCK. ALL THE TIME.
