Tom, your avatar looks like this character 束 with stuff around it.
totally…
Summer as young Galadriel
Duncan Idaho as a Hobbit.
Hey, those Elven cloaks are Atreides green! Woot!!
Tom’s avatar is an amalgam of “JRRT” (Tolkien’s initials, with one of the "R"s reversed.) What is that character?
it’s a Hanji meaning “bundle”
束 bundle
derived characters
速 speed
悚 frightening
辣 spicy
剌 spike
similar characters
東 east (written by PRC as 东)
柬 name cards
The reason for 束 to mean bundle:
束 is derived from two parts, 木 which means wood, and a 囗 around the wood. It means to bundle wood together.
The character for east, 東 also has 木 (in this case meaning tree), and a 日 at the center of the tree. 日 is the sun. So east is a picture of the sun rising behind a tree.
so, just saying, i understand the pain of anyone having to learn this crap… those who managed to learn as a second language, i worship you…
Wow. very similar. I wonder if Tolkien new that.
I’m guessing he did, considering his facination with language.
It’s certainly possible, although Chinese was not one of his focus languages (they were largely northern european.)
I always find it interesting that Tolkien named the fictional land “Middle Earth”. That’s is what Han Chinese refer to China’s territory for at least 2500 years.
中方 - Shang dynasty term, Middle State.
中國 - Zhou dynasty term, Middle City. This is also the Chinese term for the China today.
中土 - Middle Earth.
中原 - Middle Plain.
Dude invented a dozen or so fictional languages for Middle Earth, including different dialects. That’s frakking amazing.
This is beautiful. The light match is perfect and, well, yeah. You know.
Here is my update:
“Sting is not the sword.”
“The sword is my penis.”
I really want to do a Ring Wraith/Nazgul/Dark Rider avatar for Lord of the Rings, but it turns out that a shadowy figure in a black robe doesn’t look that cool in 80 by 80 pixels.
ah… if only Frodo was that cool… XD
by the way, if you haven’t seen Nathan’s hammer shaped joke, go find the Dr. Horrible Con panel videos!
Bwahaha. I haven’t seen that. That’s hilarious.
Finally decided on one for Lord of the Rings:
Thats the Balrog if you can’t tell.
Gandalf the White is actually not that different from Charles the Wise…
Here’s the Mordor sig:
And the catapult sig:
And Truth or Dare in Middle Earth:
And the current Bohemian Rhapsody by Pippen:
