The Witcher PC (no spoilers)

I’ve has Mass Effect on the brain since Sean’s sales pitch and decided I needed to get a new pc rpg. The Witcher came out this past fall to very high reviews and critical acclaim but someone flew mostly under my radar due to the amazing sequence of hit games we had this year.

I finally got it and am really impressed by the features. A rhythm-based combat system, as opposed to button mashing, and the popular progressive morality and storyline effects.

Has anyone else played it? I’m just diving in now.

SS

I heard about it a while ago and it looks interesting. Probably a little too demanding for my laptop. The specs of my laptop are between the minimum and recomended, but I’m fairly sure it won’t run too smooth. Laptops aren’t great for games anyway. It’ll have to wait until I get around to building a new desktop. However that can wait until there are some definate details regarding Knights of the Old Republic III

I might actually buy this game as soon as I figure out how to use my xbox controller on the pc—I hate using a keyboard and mouse for gaming.

Don’t quote me on this…but you may be able to simply plug it into a USB port.

I’ll check out the Witcher as an un-Xbox person who is envious of Mass Effect. Viva la revolution!

I take it you don’t play many first person shooters. A mouse and keyboard is a must for them. I hate using console controllers for FPS’, although the Wii certainly has potential in that regard.

To the contrary, besides RPGs, I play a lot of first person shooters. I have tried multiple times to use the mouse and keyboard for PC games, but I could never master it. While with console controllers, I have zero problems. It is just simply easier for me to use a controller instead—less frustration and things thrown. Just what your comfortable with I suppose.

Whatever works I suppose. I can never seem to get the accuracy I want with dual analogue stick controls. Plus I find reations are reduced. Granted I was playing on my friends xbox360 so I suppose if I could get into the setting I might be able to use it more comfortably. One of the biggest problems was that the Y axis wasn’t inverted. From years of flight sims when I pull back on a stick I expect to look up.

Most of those issues you are talking about—sensitivity and inverted—can be adjusted in the settings page for most current games. I think my main problem is the keyboard. I crushed my left hand during work several years ago—it still gives me problems from time to time—and have limited feeling in my right due to a knife wound so it is awkward typing at a keyboard for me. In fact I usually type with a voice activated software system but I can still manage without.

Man, and I thought I had it rough at work…

Yep - it plus into the USB port. I acually prefer mouse and keyboard for OTS or FPS, but it’s a nice option to have.

The Witcher is an amazing game that almost flew under my radar until I started reading reviews around the web. It’s a very engrossing RPG. Here is a very detailed review of the game for anyone who is interested.

Also, there is a patch out that replaces the dialog files with the original versions that were trimmed for the release. You can find the files and how to use them here, along with some examples of before and after dialog. (Note this only changes the subtitles, not the actual spoken dialog of course.)

StevieSpin - How far into the game are you? I think I’m somewhere near the end of Chapter 2; there is a lot of gameplay here.
