Considering that they generally would live maybe 2 or 3 years, an extended lifespan could mean 5-10 years, at most.

Nothing really to ask about. It’s peasant food, a simple recipe relying on really good, fresh ingredients. Exactly the kind that are either impossible or insanely expensive to obtain in winter. Gotta wait until growing season. 
I hadn’t considered that, but that’s an interesting thought. Probably a lot harder for an owl to escape from the lab, though.
