The Next Generation discussion

With a desire to better understand Deep Space Nine, Solai started a thread for DS9 discussion. I have really enjoyed reading it and figured I’d start a thread for each of the series. So have at 'em!

The Next Generation had some incredible moments including Locutus, Worf’s trial, the Klingon civil war, Data’s quest to become human, and Riker’s beard.

Share your favorite moments or just general thots for TNG.

Star Wars and Aliens really got me involved with Space movies. TNG got me into fandom in general. I can still remember when Picard was assimilated & they ended that series with that laser eye right in the camera. That was the first time I was ever sitting there slack jawed over a television show. I couldn’t believe they ended it there! Troi, Dr Crusher, Worf, Picard, Riker, Data…all of them were like members of the family & I couldn’t wait to see what was coming next. I was not & am not a fan of the original, this show was tv at it’s best at the time.

I had grown up a TOS and Movies fan. TNG came out my 7th grade year. I was literaly a fanboy nad watched almost every episode on it’s premiere. I didn’t want to tell anyone at the time… for I would loose my geek cred, but I didn’t like it. I still watched out of trek loyalty… but i was disappointed.

I believed the crew of the 1701-D were wussy’s. I had grow up with Kirk. I expected the captain to kick butt, not be a skinny liitle bald man that stayed onboard the ship all the time. Riker I liked. I hated Worf at first because he was the Science officer. Yar was supposed to be the security chief… but she was a little girl as well and was all crying about her childhood. I wanted Heroes in the clasic sense, not uber sensiteve girly heroes. I wanted Bad Klingons, more romulans, I hated the original ferengi. I was a trekkie, and at the time we all memorized starfleet tech, and which systems did what, and this is the navigator, and this is the helmsmen… TNG didn’t follow any of it. Any Panel could do anything on the ship. Geordi and Data sat in different places each week. Picard didn’t get girls, He didn’t fight, the aliens seemed kinda lame( one planet was just Black people- that was their alien culture, kinda offensive- and I’m not even black ) . And Wesley…lordy lordy Wesley. The Kes of TNG.

But, after a few years… they got thier crap together ( Gene dieing many believe) and decided that gene’s vision of peaceful klingons and touchy feely, non conflict exploration… sounds great coming out of a 40 year old virgin’s mouth at a convention… but to us folks that Like The Wrath of Khan… this was crap. About that same time, enter Ron Moore: Trek’s Savior.

Great Klingon Episodes, return of the romulans more reguraly, a little darkness, ditched Wesley, enter RO Laurn. Cardasians, and much much more.

Now After watching DS9 it’s harder for me to watch TNG as a series, I prefer to pick out choice episodes ( unlike ds9 which I can watch any and all the time) there is some great trek in TNG and I have to say that it is my 3rd favorite in the trek series ( ds9, TOS+ movies, TNG, ENT, VOY). I don’t as much like it, as much as I respect it… it laid the groundwork for a new Trek universe.

As those who have been to the forum (ha!) know, I watched DS9 in its entirety for the first time last summer, and TNG during the fall. I had seen episodes of both on TV when I was growing up, but considering that I was all of 4 years old when TNG started, well, yeah. I believe that was my TMNT phase.

Anyways - I watched TNG because I wanted to like it, and there were things I liked. The Klingons, for one (particularly the Worf/Alexander episodes). I love the Klingons. I also came to respect Picard deeply, and Guinan is one of my favorite characters.

I found it enjoyable, but it didn’t catch my fancy the way DS9 had. I also had (have, since I haven’t watched more Trek since I finished up TNG) problems reconciling timelines between TNG and DS9. But it was still fun, and I’d watch it again. But there weren’t those moments, like I have with Firefly, BSG, DS9, when the characters just wrench my heart out of my chest. But I don’t think that’s what TNG is about, so it doesn’t particularly bother me.

i first watched TNG dubed with Taiwanese Mandarin… My of my classmate was nicknamed Picard because we all had to shave our heads and his looks exactly like Captain Picard’s head…

He is still called Picard till this day…

My favorite moments in TNG… well that is easy. (I don’t mean the crush that I have always had on Marina Sirtis who played Deanna Troi.)

I had actually stopped watching the show, and then as I was about to enter the summer before junior high school when I caught the last few moments of the episode Best of Both Worlds. Right as Locutus came onto the view screen and Riker gave the order to fire.

I soon then caught the entire episode by accident, and spent the summer watching as many of the season 3 episodes as I could before season 4. And I will say that I loved every second of Best of Both Worlds Part II, and it is by far my favorite moment of TNG. Something about Riker getting a field commission to Captain and taking the Enterprise-D.

What I actually wanted to see after that (and the way TV was then it wasn’t going to happen, but might happen today) was Starfleet give the ship to Riker, or to have Riker leave the Enterprise for his own command after that. Would have in my opinion been more realistic.

Maybe that is more than I meant to say, but I loved the TNG cast and show. I was sorry of the movies that they made. Not that I thought they were bad, but the spirit of Star Trek 2, 3 and 4 have never been recaptured in my opinion on the big screen.
