The Hacker Crackdown, by Bruce Sterling

The Hacker Crackdown, by Bruce Sterling, is a classic work of non-fiction (I hope that it’s still eligible). It covers the government’s freak-out on hacking in the late eighties that included, among other things, a raid on a boardgame manufacturer and resulted in the creation of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

It would make a nice followup to the Wargames rewatch and best of all it’s available free (legally) on the net (as well as non-free in bookstores.) Both the text and an audiobook/podcast (by Cory Doctorow, no less) are available, so nobody has an excuse not to read it  .

I was listening to the Cory Doctorow podcast of the novel until Christmas when I recieved the book. To the point that I was at it was wonderful, the only reason I stopped listening was because I have the book and am just now starting to read it from the start. Its wonderful, I highly suggest it. Thanks Pike, always happy to see I’m not the only one who reads BoingBoing.net
