Haha! Not exactly … Without spoiling too much, it’s more that the book takes place in an alternate dimension where the Protestant Reformation never happened. The Magisterium, this dimension’s larger version of the Catholic church, uses its size and influence to impede scientific discovery of what’s really responsible for Original Sin and endorses some unethical experiments to do its own research. That and the author of the books it’s based on is an atheist and very public about that fact.
Ah, so it’s the story of America, except Catholic. Got it.
