The Forever War by Joe Haldeman

For your consideration…

Winner of the Nebula Award in 1975 and the Hugo Award in 1976. This tells the story of intestellar war and all the new problems the situation brings. It is said that…

a) It is semi autobiographical as the author served in the Vietnam Conflict (e.g the main protagonist’s name is almost an anagram of his own surname and the main heroines name is built around his wife’s maiden name.

b) It was a response to Heinlein’s Starship Troopers which was considered very pro military.

A book that should be required reading for all military personnel about the futility of war and is my “Desert Island Disc” book of choice.

I’ve actually been looking for this book lately. I guess I’ll have to Amazon it.

I really enjoyed this - the whole relativity thing is brilliant. Wasn’t so keen on the sequel though.

Agreed. I found “Forever Peace” and “Forever Free” boring and derivative.

Reading the sequel Forever Free at the moment… doesn’t seem to bad. Not as good as the first though.

This is one of my favorite sci-fi books, second only to Starship Troopers.
