Definitely excited for Season 2. Season 1 felt like it cracked open so many doors but we only got a few brief glimpses through each one, hopefully Season 2 will shed some more light on the characters and the setting. I feel like alot of the secondary actors didn’t get as much screen time as I would’ve liked, so I’m very interested in seeing more of Jared Harris’ and Chad Coleman’s characters and what they’ve got going on behind closed doors…
I have to say. I watched the first few episodes and I was not hooked. I actually feel asleep during them. Could be because I was exhausted but… anyway, I didn’t get it but more important I hated the advertisement, “Battlestar Galactica meets Game of Thrones.” Ugh. I believe that’s what bugged me most about it. Also, I had a problem with Miller’s motivation to save this rich girl. Was he bored with his current situation? Was he just creepy and wanted to help a hot chick? Was he in it for the money? I felt like it was one of those, “If you only read the book, you’d understand.”
So, I skipped this show.
Then, folks started asking me if I had seen “The Expanse”? I responded exactly what you just read above.
FF’d to last month. The Expanse was on Amazon Prime so I gave it another shot. What got me hooked: Shohreh Aghdashloo’s performance; the characters, and anything Martian. I especially love Gunny Honey Bunny!! She would so kick my ass oif she heard that (and I would love every moment). It definitely has a Firefly vibe more than Game of Thrones or Battlestar. I still feel there are a lot of winks and nods to the books. Not having read them, I cannot confirm that. That being said, I’m a fan checking it out week-to-week.
I have to say this show benefits from repeated viewings. During the first season I enjoyed the first few episodes, but had not fallen in love with it. Then I saw CQB and the scene at the end where they get on board the Tachi and escaped from the dying Donnager. I was hooked. Going back and rewatching that first season, I really found that I enjoyed it much more than the first time around. Season 2 was even better than season one. I hope this is a show that gets to tell the entire story of the books (which are awesome if you haven’t read them) before being cancelled.
I have such mixed feelings…
First let me say that
I love space SciFi. I love space operas.
I love a long in-depth developing story.
I really love the books.
I read all the books twice before Season 1.
It’s great to see our heros on screen.
All the actors get their character and make them believable.
And the Roci - love that ship!
There are differences here and there from the book story, but it works well.
The world building is subtle and has so much depth.
The look of it, is spectacular, so cinematic. It’s beautiful !!
I hope it won’t get cancelled until they get through all the books.
So why the mixed feelings?
Something is missing for me, and I can’t figure out what.
Still thinking about it.
I watched the entire first season and had that thought a lot. I think, for me, it was that a lot of the humor of the books wasn’t translating into the show. Holden is funny, that’s one of the reasons why I like the character. Amos is awesome, chilling, and funny. Without the funny, he’s just kind of scary. Also, there is a camaraderie among the crew that is also missing in the first season. Between Holden and Naiomi, Alex and Amos, and just in general how they all relate to each other which brings me back to the books over and over. Amos calls Clarissa Mao “Peaches”, and that’s just funny. I think everyone was just taking their characters too darn seriously.
I am starting to see that come out in season two although I haven’t seen it past the first three episodes. For me it’s a little bit like Firefly in that I just have an affection for all the characters and that just didn’t translate onto the screen in the first season… Make sense or no?
I hope the Expanse makes it a few seasons, it’s certainly one of the best things around right now.

Also the deep camaraderie.
I think the attempt to make the TV version “dramatic”, only makes the crew come across as eternally hostile to each other. Especially the exchanges between Holden and Amos.
And that just ain’t in the books.
Nevertheless, still enjoying this immensely.
