The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) 1/1 @ 10 PM ET

Not quite yet. I’ll be around for a bit.

So you had seen this movie before, right?

One more thing, though. Something smells like Shat. Could it be Talos?

I haven’t seen him around today. Could be the real Shat.

Yeah, I watched it yesterday for the first time and watched it again during the Frak.

Thanx B!

Interesting. I stumbled in as the Frak ended. I’m off to bed as well. Looks like y’all had a fun time. A good turn-out.

I spent the preceding hours forcing my sister and her boyfriend to watch Fringe.

I just felt a presence… Like I was being watched.

Wow. You need to watch it more then. I practically grew up watching this movie. Watched it whenever I stumbled across it. I still find new things to love about it.

The classics always bring 'em out.

I’ve seen only a few episodes. I need to catch up.

'Talos sees all.

Well, as older movies go… well, let me rephrase that. As older movies THAT I HAVE SEEN go(consisting mostly of MST3K episodes), it was well-acted, concise, and had interesting characters and themes that kept me invested in the outcome of the plot. Overall, a great watch. I have it stored on my iPod in case I should choose to rewatch it. I do get bored on the train occasionally

Ouch! That came out wrong.

The acting was also better than a lot of NEWER movies I’m sorry to say I’ve seen.

It’s OK. You’ll learn to love it.

Have you ever seen the remake before? After watching this, you’ll see just how far off the mark it was. :frowning:

I have not, and I don’t really feel the need to. In my opinion, unless the original does something so wrong that it needs to be rectified, heheh, then there’s no need to remake a film.

In executives’ eyes, of course, the “wrong” is that they haven’t made any money on it.

IMO, it was the first science fiction movie that took a chance to be taken seriously. It tackled real issues and embraced the genre’s true purpose; to educate through allegory. It was not us-vs.-them. There is no black hat in this. It’s a cautionary tale and it brings a message of hope. It even goes so far to say Humanity is worth saving.

I was thinking about all the re-makes recently. It used to be they would re-release old films in theatres. You could see this or Forbidden Planet or any classic at the local theatre if they happen to show it. The theatres could then make some money on the deal. Nowadays people have home theatres. The only way to get them to see a story is to re-make. You’ve already seen the orignal and own it on DVD. Well here is a flashy new version. sparkle sparkle and viewers go, “Shiny.”

I understand the lesson, and that it was a fairly revolutionary concept in the 50’s, but I still feel that Klaatu’s methods were a shade villainous.

You’re definitely right about that. That said, it’s not a bad movie in its own right. If they had changed the title and character names, it would be perfectly enjoyable. Trying to call it an update of a classic is laughable, though. OTOH, sometime a great reimagining can take a classic into a great new direction, like the 1978 versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing.

Well said.

I assume the misstep is that the filmmakers of the new version didn’t have anything original to say.

I took it as condescending. Hey you got a nice planet here and most of y’all are pretty good folks. You just gotta learn to live with each other and enjoy what you have here.

It’s a bit judgmental but he is from the heavens, advanced cultures tend to do that. At least he didn’t rape our resources and force us to…oh wait where have I seen that before?

Not to mention that many people under 30 have never seen a black & white movie and can’t imagine why anyone would want to. :frowning:

How so? His demonstration of power was absolute but tinged with mercy. Gort could just as well have left DC a smoking crater and then maybe the Earth would listen to his message. I don’t honestly believe that he could get the attention of the world without something major. If anything, he was just letting us know about the way the rest of the universe worked. If we wanted to be a part of it, we had to follow those rules.

The '51 version was about atomic destruction. The newer version and I’ll put spoilers
was about the environment. We are destroying the planet and must be Green
Imagine a silent movie. They might riot.
