Beethoven’s 9th, 4th movement starting at 3:17 in. Its when the music dies down and its a slow build up of strings then explodes triumphantly is the single most exciting point of music ever written.

I don’t usually link to songs you can’t D/L (easily,) but this video redeems that. It’s essentially The Thing redone with GI Joes:

You can listen on their myspace.

Southern anthem by Iron & wine

cause i got high by the indomitable “Afroman”

Sailor’s Warning by Blood Meridian (just an incredible band of artists)

Here’s where I feel like the world’s most overly-serious downer of all: I hate this song because of the one line about child support. I know that it’s an irrational level of hatred since I was the kid who got walked out on and whose dad never sent a dime, but that lyric moved a lighthearted, smoke-filled bit of fun so far across the line that I can’t listen to it. It’s not funny to joke about abandoning your kids. Make fun, tell me not to be such a wet blanket, etc, and I won’t blame you (a large part of me agrees with you), but I still can’t listen to that song.

I less than three Jonathan Coulter. You also mentioned the excellent parody by Dynamite Hack. Good taste in music, Mr. Lister, Sir.

Since we’re on a silly kick, my recommendation today is: Popular by Nada Surf. It’s like the sometimes food of music: delicious and best when indulged only once in a while.

I think I’m Paranoid by Garbage

Doveman’s cover of the entire Footloose soundtrack, which re-renders the tunes as super-somber versions, mostly piano-driven. He did it for a friend, to pay tribute to the guy’s late sister, who died in the 80s. More details at the website, which has streaming audio of the whole disc:

“Not This Castle” (Hiroshi VS Whoremoans) from the free compilation “Here Comes A New Challenger.”

That was hilarious! And set to one of the greatest themes of my life.

I get where you’re coming from, but, I always chose to see the song a little differently. I saw it not necessarily as a smoke-filled bit of fun, but as a smoke filled list of short-comings. Like, I could have been a decent person, but I chose to get high instead. Instead of making me mad, it makes me sad.
