Here’s one from a few years back…“Christiansands” by Tricky (yes, the same Tricky who played Zorg’s raspy-voiced majordomo in “The Fifth Element”).

Ah hellz yeah. PMT may be Tricky’s most consistent album. Totally overlooked. Tricky, here I come…

Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones

Mondays are rough during the best of times. And after the holidays, I always find I need some extra-soothing tunes to help me re-adjust to the grind. Here’s part five of a five-disc mix I use to make it through Monday mornings.

Week after week, I found myself reaching for the same tunes, and wasting time swapping out CDs. Finally, I started pulling them together into mixes. And as I came across new tunes, I took note of them and collected more. I’m starting with part five because it has the BSG tie-in, Phillip Glass’s “Metamorphosis.”

It’s a pretty diverse collection of artists, but the songs have a sonic and psychic continuity to them that makes them all work together. I think so anyway. Lots of piano, sensual beats, strings, subtle horns. Each mix is about a full CD, maybe a little less. Some of the other editions feature Cat Power, New Order, Tricky, Air, Mastodon, Converge, Happy Mondays, the Good the Bad & the Queen, and others. All are authorized for linear or random play.

Monday Mornings: Mellow, Moody, Melancholy, and Mild Tunes To Ease Your Way Into the Work Week. Disc Five:

  1. Nine Inch Nails, “Every Day Is Exactly the Same”
  • NIN’s uptempo stuff has been hit-and-miss in recent years, but Reznor’s mellow material is always a winner.
  1. Beastie Boys, “Futterman’s Rule”
  • Heavier instrumental
  1. Celtic Frost, “Winter (Requiem)”
  • Dark traditional string instrumental from metal legends.
  1. Buck 65, “Drawing Curtains”
  • Alt-rapper with really evocative background tracks. This one has some whispered French background vocals. Piano + strings, too.
  1. Low in the Sky, “Dialogue With a Shadow”
  • Akron soundscapists get experimental with a whole bevvy of sounds and instruments, but not TOO experimental. One of the group’s key guys is Joe Mindadeo, whose remix of the GWC theme serves as the podcast’s outro music. This track sounds like industrial electric accordian.
  1. Aleck Jaris performs Phillip Glass’s “Metamorphosis II”
  • Jaris’ version was the only one available on eMusic and iTunes. Pretty darned close to the orignal. II and V are the winners; with the rest, Glass’ repetitive tehcnique wears thin pretty quicl.
  1. Low in the Sky, “Fnd Wax Cylindr At Abandnd Shell Station”
  • Lightly percussive soundscape.
  1. Helen Money, “Birds”
  • Plunky string instrumental with a not-so-subtle melody; I skip this one sometimes, but liked it enough to include in the final version.
  1. Beastie Boys, “Transitions”
  • Trippy funk; all the B-Boys tracks are instrumental
  1. Low in the Sky, “Pursuit of the Giant Squid”

  2. Low in the Sky, “And Snow [While Surfacing]

  • Back-to-back tracks by the same artist violates the rules of conscientious mix-making, but again, it’s OK to listen to these sets on random.
  1. Buck 65, “Corrugated Tin Façade”
  • Really haunting, uplifting, non-lyrics female vocals on this one.
  1. Interpol, “The Lighthouse”
  • Hushed outtro from new album. Has some percussion strikes that sound like ominous bells.
  1. Aleck Karis performs Phillip Glass’s “Metamorphosis V”
  • Everyone’s favorite, from BSG episode “Valley of Darkness.” If Starbuck’s dad was really a Cylon, what does it say about the race that a so-called toaster could write something like this?
  1. TV on the Radio, “I Was a Lover”
  • Horns and a funky beat end your A.M. on an up note.

Two more tie-ins with current GWC conversation…

Yes, “Starship Trooper”

Mariah Carey, “Hero.”
