The Cold Equations (short story)

There be joy!

I’m preparing a lesson on science fiction literature and I was absolutely itching to use The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin as a classroom text.

So there I was, standing in front of the Xerox, dreading the work of copying 30-odd pages from a trade paperback, changing their size so as to make more pages fit on a sheet of paper to cut the cost and THEN copy the whole thing 29 times for the class … when all of a sudden, the light of wisdom shone on my head and I googled the story and found the full text freely available online, so now I can format it accordingly and just print it out. That probably saved me two hours of menial work.

It’s a classic scifi story, one of those that you absolutely have to have read.

It is an awesome story. Very sobering as well. I took a class on the literatur of SF a few years back and it was one of the ones we read ( I already knew it). I’d love to hear your classes reactions to it.
