The Brian Herbert/Kevin Anderson "Dune" Sequels

There was some discussion on Twitter recently about Dune and the Dune series, including the books by Frank Herbert’s son Brain Herbet (and Kevin Anderson).

I enjoyed the Dune prequels that Brain Herbet/Kevin Anderson wrote.

But then BH/KA went a actually did some sequels finishing off Frank Herbert’s Dune series. FH died before finishing it, and apparently BH/KA found FH’s notes and picked up where FH’s ChapterHouse Dune left off and wrote “Hunters of Dune” and Sandworms of Dune".
While reading them I had a bad, growing feeling that the conclusion was gonna be dissatisfying and, it turns out of was right.

Anyway, the mention off all this made be remember that I PMed Badger (RonMooreHasPrettyHair) last year at the time when finished reading “Sandworms of Dune” explaining why I felt it was dissatisfying.

Below is that PM that I sent him. Badger found it for me, and suggested I post it here in the book forum.
Warning: It is SPOILER DYNAMITE in that it reveals the whole ending of the Dune series, so if you even do intend to read “Hunters of Dune” and “Sandworms of Dune” DON’T read what’s in the spoiler box below.
But my personal opinion (and remember I’m a huge Dune fan and otherwise pretty pleased with BH/KA’s other Dune stuff) I can’t recommend “Hunters of Dune” and “Sandworms of Dune”.
It’s kinda like someone coming along and writing a sequel to Lord of the Rings. Almost doomed from the start.

Yeah, that ending sucked with the power of a kilosun.

I would be really angry if I had actually spent money on “Sandworms of Dune.” That was my free Audible book, and that’s the only reason I finished it. If I had actually had to read it, I never would have made it through the end. The prequel stuff by BH and KJA was good, and I enjoyed it. The sequels are garbage. Don’t ruin the series for yourself by reading them. Make up your own ending.

Sounds like we’re on the same page.
Have you read all six of the prequels? The “House” books, and the “Butlerian Jihad” set, etc?

Read them and enjoyed them. It was nice to be in the universe and hear some new stories.

But I felt like I’d read (heard, whatever) really bad fanfiction after sandworms. Hunters was ok because it was just setup, but it setup a massive pile of craaap, and by association, it became craaap as well.

Ditto for me I couldn’t wait to finish off the prequel books. Then they decided to finish off the series. I was exstatic I figure if the ending was as good as the prequels they were worth reading. How disappointed was I. I actually read it twice figuring that I had missed something that would have made it somehow better. I was wrong again.

I have read the Butlerian Jihad and really enjoyed it. I liked finding out how the Atedies/Harkonnon feud started. I was going to read the ending for the seris but from what I read here maybe I will just make up my own ending… Everyone has all the spice they want and lives happily ever-after

I have not read anything past Children of Dune maybe I can read the ones that Frank Herbert wrote and then make up my own ending.

“Everyone has all the spice they want and lives happily ever-after”
Excellent. LOL. I like it.

Yeah, God Emperor of Dune is a fascinating story and unique compared to all the other books. It focuses mainly on Leto II who has become a Worm/Human hybrid.

Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune both have the Frank Herbert touch, so I’d say “go for it”.

Me, I’m debating whether to go and read “Paul of Dune”.
(I’ve read all the Dune books except that one).

I’ve read the prequels - tho I’m still finishing up the last one, The Battle of Corrin. I’m about halfway through, but I’m stalled. Have been for about 2 yrs. At this point I’ll have to reread it all.

Haven’t read Paul of Dune, but I will eventually.
So have you heard about the newest installment, Winds of Dune?

You’ve gotta read it at this point. You’ve invested too much time and energy not to.

I have not heard of Winds of Dune. I’m intrigued. I’m off to the Googles to find our more.

That’s what I’m thinking too.

That’s what I thot before reading Sandworms of Dune.
