SW KOTOR MMO announced

SAN FRANCISCO–Today at a flashy media event in San Francisco, LucasArts and BioWare announced development of the PC massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic. Though ostensibly suspenseful, the unveiling’s thunder was stolen this past July by John Riccitiello, CEO of BioWare parent Electronic Arts. Speaking to a business-oriented magazine, the executive casually confirmed that, yes, BioWare was working on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Universe.

Huh. Seems interesting. It sounds like they’re putting a lot of focus on single player storylines and the choices in those storylines. I like that.

The only thing off-putting to me right now is the (what appear to be ingame) graphics. They’re highly stylized and cartoony (a bit like WoW, presumably so it runs on a wide range of systems). The concept art, however, looks awesome, in typical Bioware fashion.

Gameplay details, amount of content, release date, etc. is all unknown right now. All we know is that it’s early in production and it’ll be done when it’s done.

I’m pretty excited overall though. How about you guys?

I’m more excited about Stargate Worlds at this time. A new SW MMO might be ok though. Already play too many as it is.

Neat details from that, like the focus on “contact based combat” (I’m guessing everyone is going to have a lightsaber). They actually have one of the Age of Conan guys on the team.

Huh. It’s not D20, either. I hope for Mass Effect style combat.

EDIT: Also, allegedly no content is shared between any of the classes. Huh.

Interesting, if they do this right, I might consider giving it a try.

This might actually make me interested in an MMO. I love the KOTOR universe. And would be interested in being able to play a more story driven MMO rather than the grind that is what most MMOs are now.

As for the Graphics they said what they are showing are Pre-Alpha so i am willing to bet they will get better. Im not expecting to see this till Late 09 or maybe 2010

Good point on the pre-alpha graphics thing. It is a bit early to be criticizing stuff like that.

I hope it starts in '09, although I suppose '10 is possible. I would have figured they were working on this for a while, but it seems to have only been a few months so far.
