Statistics

With baseball/softball season around the corner, I was reminiscing about when I was a little frakkintalos.

I wouldn’t consider myself a math geek but I’m a stat geek. I remember grabbing the daily paper. Going through the box scores and tallying batting average, slugging percentage, earned run average. Incidently, I spent a whole day trying to figure out ERA. For those curious, multiply the total earned runs charged by 9, and divide the result by the total number of innings pitched.

To this day, I have kept the historical stats for my softball team named the Rogues (coined from Rogue Squadron) for the past 10 years. BTW, they weren’t requested.

It has carried over to rating Star Trek, Babylon 5, Farscape, etc. episodes from data accumulated from several sources that track votes and ratings. I have spreadsheet upon spreadsheet sorting what is the best episode of a particular season/overall/etc. I think ya get the point.

Anybody else share a similar obsession? Or is I a freak!?!

Nope, I have the same obbsession. It’s why I’ve never really gotten into baseball. I’m afraid of what it might do to me.

I think you both might be freaks…but I mean that in a good way.

i am also a baseball stat geek. tho i am not very good at it yet. I am learning tho. I am having questions about how to calculate EqA… specifically that since EqA essentially is a league average weighted Equivelant Run Per Out, what happens when there is no out for a player??

I have a friend who collects data and runs regression analyses for fun… on weird stuff like where people move and how many pairs of shoes we have.

I on the other hand almost died in my economics stats course last semester. Really. Near death experiences became the norm. But I grew to kind of like it, which makes me a freak in a whole different way than you freaks.

You are indeed a freak. But that’s beside the point. I follow the baseball stats of the New England patriots, but I’m not that diligent, I confess, when it comes to how many baskets the goalie gets per season.

You didn’t happen to see the, ah, final fiver by any chance ? Some of us were wondering…
