It’s sorta-kinda a spoiler for later seasons of SG-1, but the Ancients were the race that originally built the stargates. Humans are basically descended from them. Most of them died millennia ago after a plague, but some learned to ascend — essentially developing into energy beings without physical bodies.

so I still like SG:U. I maintain that my lack of familiarity with the earlier series lets me enjoy this without having to compare it to the others - and having seen what I have so far of SG-1 wow they’re very different. But I like them both.
But tonally, I need that melancholy in my life 
SG:U doesn’t fill the BSG-shaped hole, but it gestures towards it.

As to the SGU DVDs, they are out, but they got split into 1.0 and 1.5 the way some BSG seasons did.
