One minor nitpick:
In 1969, they missed entering the gate by a few seconds and ended up way further in the future than they planned, yet their timetable didn’t have to be nearly as precise for when they tossed the note through in this episode.
They’re obviously intended to be disabling, more than instantly lethal.
Sort of like death by a swarm of mosquitoes. :eek:
Maybe going to the past is easier. 
Or maybe the Aschen changed the gate to be powered by Plotonium when they brought a DHD over.
