Starfleet Academy comes to middle school

I found this article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in my daily education newsbrief

These kids today…

Why when I was a lad, if you wanted Trek in school you had to type it into a TRS-80 in BASIC!

I love the student quotes at the end.

Cadet Ebony Holland, 13, says some of her peers envy her days in Starfleet, which teaches all the core subjects.

“You don’t have to carry your books from place to place. When you need help, there is always a teacher available.”

Other students don’t quite understand it. “Some of them think we are ‘special,’ ” said Tommy Perceval, 13, who has watched his grades go from average to mostly A’s and B’s since August.

“I don’t care what people think. We have a lot of fun.”

When I was in sixth grade we had to hide our geek powers. My best friend and I had to keep our Star Fleet Technical Manuals hidden from the teacher’s site. She was totally prejudiced against us mutants.

and now we geeks are the teachers, so frak the bigots!

Damn right, sister.

I forwarded that article to my school director. Perhaps I need request a budget increase uniforms and such…

On the other hand, I don’t really want to be a subject for Trekkies III–the Wrath of Math

OK, is there anyone out there willing to admit you, or your parents had a Starfleet Academy decal on the back windshield?

No but I wore a Next Generation Communicator pin on my high school Letterman jacket.

I had the decal at some point, but I don’t generally put anything on my car.

No decal, but I was in the Star Trek Club in high school. We got together each weekend and watched an episode on TV and then discussed it and many other geeky topics. What fun!

Someone in our parking lot has one on their car. I have no idea who it is, but everytime I go by that car it makes me smile.

What prompted me to ask the question- I drove behind a car with one. It also made me smile.
