ok, under most circumstances i operate under a sort of live and let live doctrine, but come on now, this is just ridiculous.
This particular site might be a parody, but I unfortunately have met people that hold this view. Listening to them in person is more creepy then you would think…
yea stuff like this always creeps me out. it reminds me of a BBC documentary i just watched the other day by Louis Theroux called “The Most Hated Family In America” about the infamous Westboro Baptist Church (aka the God Hates F**s church). that was 100 times more frightening than “Mirrors”, which i just saw last night (not recommended).
Weeellll…I didn’t see Star Wars until about junior-highish age because the nebulous power of The Force was considered too New-Agey (the New Age was a big bugaboo when I was a kid, at least in the brand of conservative Christianity I grew up in). The fam grew out of that, though.
I still think people have the right to hold back from viewing/reading material if they disagree with its worldview, and even, if their children are still young enough, to exercise authority over what they watch. And if they want to express their views and concerns with campy tracts–well, they don’t call it a free country for nothin’. It’s just too bad they can’t see the value of a good story told with imagination celebrating friendship, courage, and the triumph of good over evil. But I’m sure everyone here gets that, so I won’t preach to the choir.
EDIT: Checked out the site. It’s a prank. Guess it’s working.
Parody or not the site was funny.
You can tell the whoever made the site is a Trekkie. I had an experience at the last SW celebration I went to where people were handing out pamphlets about Jesus being the real force or something.
I’m tempted to buy a t-shirt.
that’s hilariously awesome thanks for sharing!
and as an aside… I have some relatives (very convolutedly) that are in the Harry-Potter-is-Satan camp… but they never had issues with Star Wars. iiiiiiiiinteresting…
Yeah, my folks started out on that kick at the beginning, but even as born-again RC’s, their own pastor spoke about two months later from the pulpit and said, “Well, it’s not any form of sorcery you need to worry over regarding your kids…rather a fun story.”
I guess that’s about as ringing of an endorsement as you’ll get. The ‘moms’ is now a big HP fan, and I even got her to give in to Paolini’s Inheritance trilogy, though neither of us has had the time to read Brisingr yet. Hmmm…I wonder if that’s being discussed anywhere here? :::searching:::
Yeah it’s sitting next to my desk, under a bunch of work books and the Yiddish Policemen’s Union. I’ll get to it eventually (though eventually might be after my PhD exams…)
If I recall correctly, there is some discussion of the trilogy (or at least the first 2 books) in the thread looking for fantasy books. Or you can always start one if you want to talk about it
