Star Wars books

I never read Truce at Bakura but my wife did. Her response: Meh. However she loved the Thrawn trilogy as did I. Sooooo, if you get bored or unimpressed with Truce at Bakura, don’t miss Zahn’s Thrawn stuff. Say that three times fast.

I read Bakura ten years ago or so. Some of it was okay, especially everything that dealt with what happened to Luke right after the events of Return of the Jedi and the cooperation between the rebels and the empire had some fun moments, but the aliens weren’t really worth the price of the book.

I’ve started doing my annual Star Wars re-read, and just in time too because the novelization of The Clone Wars movie came out today and I picked up a copy. Star Wars is the reason why I have stacks of books around my apartment that I haven’t read yet because I can’t stop reading my Star Wars books.

Okay- I decided to start with Truce at Bakura and then would like to skip to the Courtship of Princess Leia and then go on to the Thrawn trilogy. Does that sound okay? I did buy an illustrated chronological history too, to help fill in some blanks. Monday night I’m going to see the Clone Wars author, which should be great.

One book that you can throw in before the Thrawn Trilogy, and is worth your time, is Tatoonie Ghost.

It’s been years since I’ve read Truce as well. GR’s assessment is basically how I feel too. Another cool little bit is that Leia talks to Jedi Ghost Anakin. Bakura is worth the effort because that book comes back into play in The Corellian Trilogy and then again in The New Jedi Order.

Heh, it’s the same with me. It’s Star Wars and the Dune books that keep me away from my non-fiction reads most of the time.

I’m in the middle of the second Darth Bane book - Rule of Two. Fascinating all of the history of the Sith and Jedi that it has. Darth Bane scares the crap out of me…the living plates on his body are just freaky!

I’m interested in reading/re-reading these books. I’ve already nailed quite a bit in my time. how would this “book club” work ?
fill me in. you have piqued my interest.

-Chris

Well, we haven’t talked about the book club since the initial idea. Just free flowing here… We pick a book or series. I think we’ve decided to start with the Thrawn Trilogy and then give like a time frame to read the book. I’m thinking 3-4 weeks. How do you guys do the normal book club? Then make a thread in either this section or the SW section for the book, kind of like the frak party threads. Then post comments as you read along.

Ive read:

The Thrawn Trilogy

The first three in the New Jedi Order

The first few in the Legacy Series minus the first one. Im about to start on Sacrifice.

Some of the old school Han Solo stories

Bounty Hunter tales

Stories of the Cantina

and Darth Maul Shadow Hunter.

Ive listened to many more.

I’m down for the Thrawn Trilogy. I think that’d be awesome. Anyone else want to do this?

I’ll do Thrawn - just ordered from Amazon, and I’ve never read them!!!

I’ve read all of the adult fiction books. I never did try the several young-adult series. I also gritted my teeth throught the KW Jeter series (Bounty Hunter Wars). I’m not sure which books you’re classifying as the main series, but I can tell you that DarkSaber and Crystal Star were painful to finish.

I wish I could wait to buy the books until they are at Half Price Books, but I have a weakness and a need to buy them on the day they are released and read them as soon as possible!

Yeah the Bounty Hunter books are a little so-so. I mainly enjoy the parts about Fett in the Guild and the stuff with Prince Xizor (pronounced shee-zor ). You didn’t like Darksaber? I loved that book minus the EU JarJar Binks Caslista. And I agree about Crystal Star. If you see that book in a book store run away or buy it and burn the book. Although, if you are a completest, like me, then you have to read Crystal Star. :stuck_out_tongue:

Concerning Young Adult Books… Young Jedi Knights is a must. Very good teen series. Also Junior Jedi Knights for younger readers is a fun series. Both these series play a major role in the New Jedi Order and beyond era. Jude Wilson’s PT young adult books are great as well. The Boba Fett series is worth checking out too.

I consider all the books the main series. I mean every book, comic and vid game story resonates in one way or another in the Expanded Universe. Even the dreaded Crystal Star is EU cannon. There are a few exceptions to the rule like Galaxy of Fear and the Lost Jedi Prince series.

I used to have the same weakness about buying the latest books. Then I quit college, got a real job and had bills to pay. Half Books is awesome. I can’t believe how much money I wasted on the Hardbacks. The HBs are not cheap and they add up depending on how many HBs come out in a year. Plus you have the paperbacks in between the HBs, which doesn’t help. Although, DawnAZ has convinced me to go out and buy The Clone Wars novelization this weekend.

The Clone Wars novelization it actually one of the cheapest hardbacks I’ve ever purchased. The book only retails for 20.00 and most places have it on sale for 20% off at least.

Um…when I say “Main series” I classify that as anything between the novelization of PM to NJO. Mainly anything that deals with the core characters like Anakin, Han, Luke etc.

I think I would have like the Jeter books more if there wasn’t all that muck about the giant space spiders. I mean c’mon! The explanation of how Fett got out of the sarlaac was great but I just couldn’t make it through them. Maybe I need to go back and try again.

Sorry Tigh but I didn’t like Darksaber either. Although by far it was much more readable than Crystal Star and Planet of Twilight. Those just plain sucked.

ears perk up Clone Wars novelization? Must. Have!!! I need to get that and then I need to have the Force Unleashed novel the instant it comes out.

Question for you Tigh, in your infinite wisdom, do you happen to know if anyone has said anything about A) the rest of the YJK books being condensed like the first two trilogy/sets were and B) if there are any plans to anthologize the Jude Watson et al books? I’d love to get a hold of all of them but at several bucks a pop I’m a tad put off cause there’s a damn lot of them!

I can’t really speak for the YJK series because I own the original individual novels. I know they did a couple but I’m not sure about the Bounty Hunter or Black Sun arcs. With the Watson books, the only thing I vaguely remember is that they did an omnibus for the Special Edition books of Legacy of the Jedi and Secrets of the Jedi.

A quick google and Amazon search came up with this…
Legacy/Secrets
YJK Trilogy 1
YJK Trilogy 2

And at the bottom of it’s wikkipedia page they have a bunch of omnibuses listed for Young Jedi Knight…
YJK Wikki

Happy hunting.

Thankies! I’ve got the first two YJK books (the anthology ones) so that’s a check but I know there’s a lot more books in that series. Darn them for not putting out more.

I’ll go search for the Legacy/Secrets one.

I started reading the Thrawn trilogy, I’m liking it so far about half way in the book.

Did you read Outbound flight (OF) first??

I just bought the Thrawn trilogy (TT) as well. It was recommended to me that I read OF before startomg the TT. So, I did and so far I am happy I did. OF is a prequel of sorts for the TT, not only that it is a very good book!

I will admit I strayed a little. Before I delve head first into 3 more books about old red eyes. I picked up ‘Allegiance’ (also by Timothy Zahn). I am almost done with it and HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!

Well I finally read Truce At Bakura and I really enjoyed it. It helped me to have it set right after ROTJ. I really liked seeing inside everyone’s head. Was it the greatest story ever told? No, but I loved being on a new adventure with characters I love. Now I’m reading The Courtship of Princess Leia and then I’ll go on to I, Jedi. Author Michael Stackpole said I should read that before the Thrawn Trilogy. I’m so glad I finally stepping into the EU!

Whoo, I, Jedi! My copy is battered to death, it was my favorite book for years. Have you read any of the X-wing books yet?

…and no, Corran Horn totally wasn’t my girlhood crush. Not at all. Nope.
