Color wasn’t ubiquitous, but many movies were in color back then (some television as well.) Here’s the Saul Bass credits (the above is an homage to his singular style) for Bojour Triestess in 1958:
The recording used in the Star Wars credits is from '67, however.
Indeed. Remember, Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, both in color (Oz may have been Technicolor, or is that too early?), were released in 1939.
