Star Trek XI (Spoilers)

Still … give me Young douche bag trek with a man named Kirk over " never been laid- bald captain - trek" anyday.

In the end- despite what the history rewriters want us to believe, Star trek was formost an action adventure TV show. This movie was the closest thing to TOS we have seen since the animated show.

Rewatch TOS. It’s all about the action and the coolness of Kirk, not bald middle aged guys trying to teach us a morality lesson!

With that in mind… with all it’s faults… Star Trek 90210 was closer to TOS than any ST series produced since.

I agree with the heart of what you’re saying.

They did the right thing rebooting Star Trek instead of another round with the TNG actors.
The movie had flaws, but they weren’t the kind of flaws that hurt my enjoyment of the movie in the theater even the slightest.
Rather they’re the kind of flaws that, thinking about the movie months later make me say “that makes no sense.”

If I remember correctly, Picard is most certainly not a member of the “never been laid” club. After all, he does spend a fun-filled week or two on that vacation planet, which includes a romantic night at an archaeological dig site.

Gotta disagree with ya, pfunky. Almost every TOS episode is a morality tale, an allegory to the state of affairs in the late 60s. Balance of Terror may on the surface look like a submarine battle but it, at times, blatantly points out prejudice and the futility of battle lines. Devil in the Dark looks like a creature-of-the-week but is really a story about communication and embracing differences. This is what I love about Trek, in all its incarnations.

There’s trickery there. The way I see it is imagine your grandmother made the best lasagna you’ve ever had. Every time she made it, you experienced a party in your mouth. One day she died but left her recipe. Your wife/brother/best-chef-in-the-world takes the recipe and tries to make it. The ingredients are there. They follow the instructions but the experience and taste are entirely different.

This was the best movie to see on a long plane flight, because the turbulence coincided exactly with the space battles.

useing this analogy…

tng is when your wife/brother/best-chef-in-the-world attempts to make the lasagna but , in the years that followed they made it with wheat pasta instead of flour, fat free cheese, tufu but still used the same sauce.

it becomes an extreme hippie version of the original. Sure… some folks might like the new version better, but not the overwhelmming majority of people that loved grandma’s pasta. They just eat it anyway… becuause it’s there and it’s the closest thing to the original. Sure it’s better in a lot of way, due to age and technology… but it looses the fat and cheesey taste that mde the original a favorite.

Then those people try multiple variations of the same dish… which are mostly still good… but they are lasagna in name only… they aren’t flollowing the formula that made the original good.

I understand that one can say that TNG is more realistic, but so what, it’s not what Star Trek had always been. If any of you are old enough… don’t you remeber your disgust when Encounter at Farpoint came on the first time. The captain was foppish and old, the uniforms were hidious, there was a kid on the ship, there was no clear villian( yes there is Q in the fist 10 mins but after that no bad guy- just a really embarassingly stupid alien that the mafe a “tacheon beam” to psudo-defeat), no action/adventure, Nothing was cool about picard. No kids at my school said " wow that picard was cool!" [ although Data and Riker looked cool].

But I give it a pass, its a pilot and they were more worried about introduceing the characters than telling a good story.

During the next few weeks… I think they did it right. But , over the nect few seasons… it became a " the enemy of the week is a tacheon particle" show. There are VERY FEW episodes a season where there is a villian. Also… there is no superhero human leading the charge, that’s what Star Trek was!

The only problem with the TNG series is the characters themselves. They are just a bunch of Dustin Hoffmans, Woody Allens, Doug ( from nik tunes), and Adam sandler type heros. There were no Captain Kirks ( don’t say Riker, he was the 1st officer, not the leader) Han Solos, Clint east woods ( Real heros) or even Starbuck and Apolos.
