I just watched the Extras from Star Trek V and William Shatner is terrified of heights. I should have remembered that. He hates flying for one thing. I knew that so I don’t know why I said he loved rock-climbing. He never did it. I do know that he was very athletic and adventurous. I guess I assumed that’s why it was in the film.
Instead, Shatner put it in there for poetic reasons, to show man’s desire to reach greater heights.
