Star Trek - The Motion Picture

I think that you quoted the frst part of my statement and didn’t get the second.

I should have said " merely being profitable isn’t good enough in hollywood" Studios require a substantial return on investment. Being profitable IS a failure. Being EXTREMELY profitable is a neccesity.

It’s kinda like you spending $40,000 and spending a month organizeing a laser light and music concert. You want it to feature a popular band that you own the rights to. The production sux. The box office brings in $42,200. Sure that is profitable… but a horribe failure. You Have a tape of the show and you put it on TV once a year and you make $3,000 every times it’s shown. Then you release a VHS copy of the show and it makes $1000 bucks a year. Eventualy ,it takes time, but it will be a sucess. However, this is a horrible bussiness model. Let’s say another producer wants to do another show… They want you to give them $35,000. Most bussiness models would say “hell no”. Unless the new people come in and really sell it.

TMP was profitable… but not a financial success in ANY model. Mere profit is not how hollywood got rich. HUGE profit is a success. TMP is just now reaching that.

BTW the ST:TMP dvd has horrible sales outside of bundles where the other movies are included, To this date. TMP hasn’t the profit margin expected of a movie of it’s cost.

Yes, yes. I’m old enough to have watched Star Trek first run on TV. We fans waited 10 years for that 1st movie. The slow flyover of the Enterprise felt like an act of worship. And yes, I saw many tears. Sure, one could go on and on about where it stumbled. But I think most fans at the time, didn’t give a crap about that. It was just so good to see the old gang again.

As for myself, this is my least favorite, but I still have enormous affection for it, even after all these years.

Ok, fair enough.

To this date. TMP hasn’t the profit margin expected of a movie of it’s cost.

I’ll take your word for it.

I was tired dude…sorry for the typo. Yes I mean NOT a total failure. lol.

I watched it last night for the first time. Fell asleep and husband could not wake me up for the last 30 minutes. :frowning: I assume a lot of those panning shots were there because at the time it was such an awesome effect. So it goes. Husband filled me in on the plot points I missed, and I gotta say, it was a really neat concept.

No, it was way too long for the standards of the time too.

The concept was great, but it had already been done in TOS.

I went looking for the novelization of this movie. I received a copy in 1979 for my 8th birthday. Yes. I read the book before seeing the film. Anyway, I can’t find it. I has a mad sad. :frowning:  I wanted to re-read the portion about Spock on Vulcan and the Kolinahr ritual.

Awww, craaaap! Where’d it go? talostears

That was a pretty good read from what I remember…hope you find it

That’s by Vonda McIntyre (sp?), right?

I probably have it in my attic. If I find it, I’ll mail it to ya.

But if I go up into my attic and you don’t hear from my in 2 days, send some one to rescue me (2 days, buy the book …get it? :stuck_out_tongue: )

it’s by Gene Roddenberry himself, I think…

Try Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Motion-Picture-Roddenberry/dp/0671830880/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1278766723&sr=1-3

Or ebay…

Thanks everyone. I’ve been looking for it on and off for a few weeks. So, this morning while looking for something totally unrelated (concrete caulk). Guess what I found? That’s right. The novel.

So frakkin weird. I post about and voila, it shows up. The power of the hivemind!!

The gray shoulder uniforms (which are probably my favorite, to be honest) weren’t until First Contact. I think the reason they did a mix of TNG and DS9 style uniforms in Generations was because some of the TNG uniforms were in bad enough shape that they wouldn’t have looked good on a movie screen. Don’t remember the exact details, but I’m pretty sure I saw or heard something about it in the Generations DVD special features.

awesome!!!
