I didn’t see this mentioned anywhere else. Has anyone seen this new internet-only series? It is a continuation of the original series with some original actors.
I tried, really tried to watch an episode but my god was it bad! Star Trek TOS was campy enough on it’s own, but this low-budget mess is just bad bad camp.
(Disclosure: I’ve actually had a falling out with them due to their forum moderation policies. While I obviously have differences with them on that subject, I can understand their reasoning. They want Trek Fanfilms to be licensed (and sold) just as Trek novels are. Awesome! My objection is that they’re a bit ham-fisted policing their own forums. And yet I understand why. (premptive sucking up to the powers that be) So there you are.)
Ahem, that said, they are definately worth checking out. Skip the first episode (since renumbered as the ‘pilot’ which is fair, b/c it was a proof of concept, primarily.) (Although, there ae some interesting concepts in it. OK, watch it last.)
“Come What May” is great. Confusing plot (multiple time travel events) but ignore that. If you’re not out of your chair cheering 3/4ths of the way through it, you’re either very young or clinically dead.
“To Serve All My Days” Is a great story, but the continuity is a bitch (you’ll understand when you see it.)
“World Enough and Time” is another potentially great story. The ‘solution’ is a bit of nonsensical technobabel, but the actors (and this is rare in a fanfilm) pull it off. One of the most remarked-upon actresses, for example is onscreen for a minute or two. The lead actress was apparently very ill during shooting, but I defy you to detect that.
NV does have a bit of a leg up, in that they were bold enough to reimagine the original series done by different actors. (Everybody else, and there are a lot of others, did concurrent stories.) As a result, they got a lot of attention, and thus a lot of volunteer work by pros-with-a-heart-of-gold, so they tend to look pretty good.
I heard much about this once Enterprise was cancelled. Since there was no more Trek I had to check it out to get my fix. You can’t just quit Trek like that. The detox is horrid. You shake, experience flashbacks, uncontrollably shout out lines of dialogue in public (this is embarassing yet you’d be surprised what you can get away with on the NYC subway system) I walked into a subway car (you have to admit the doors are very similiar to the ones on the Enterprise) I began, “Standard orbit, Mr. Sulu. Spock give me an analysis of the planet.” The people at Trek anonymous were very helpful.
My impression of NV has already been stated by Pike. I was most impressed with the set designs, some were used in the Mirror universe episodes of Enterprise. Incidently, these sets are based in me home state and used in the recent fan/ex-stars of Trek series film called ‘Of Gods and Men’. I am not a good judge on this since like Reverend Sean, me likes bad sci-fi too. I saw Star Trek V in the theatre more than once and have it in my collection. That’s saying a lot, people!! They go to a planet to find God. Who thought that was a good idea? Bill? You know what I’m going off-topic. Focus, man. Focus.
I agree with Pike’s and Frakintalos’s comments. Definitely worth checking out. Amazing how authentic the set, uniforms and props are. And the acting wouldn’t win any awards, but on the other hand its miles above the other “fan” created episodes that are out there on the (and there’s lots of them.)
Also, it’s pretty amazing to see the level of special effects (space battles and so on) that can be created by a guy with a computer (they surpase the 1960s version of the TV show in that regard at least.).
Just one quibble, Pike (just so no one is confused by your recomendation). The pilot that should be ingored is “Come What May” the the episode description where you say “Confusing plot (multiple time travel events)” is actually “In Harm’s Way” (You should know better given your screen name Pike )
I’ve watch 'em all so far except “World and Time Enough”–it’s sitting there on my iPod waiting for me to find that time. Will I enjoy George Takei in it? Or will it make me cringe?
You’re so right about the pilot “Come What May” being a proof of concept. For instance, in that one they hadn’t yet realized that if you have background music in every moment of every scene, it gets real distracting and all the audience can think about is “enough with the music already.”
There’s acutally an “audio commentary” track (an mp3 file set) by I think the writer and director of “In Harm’s Way”. Pretty interesting.
You will not cringe. Takei is great, especially when he bust out the sword and starts swinging. The man still got the moves. Each ‘New Voyages’ episode gets better. The next one was written by David Gerrold. Blood and Fire, me thinks.
I’ve got to check out the commentary. Thanx for looking out, Thotfull. You’re so…ummmm…hmmmm…errrr…thoughtful.
