Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 4/3 @ 10 PM ET

Oh, me too. And I grinned all the way through each time I saw it in the theater.
But, if you ask me to look back and name my favorites, this one isn’t in the upper half for me.

What could be more interesting or dangerous than '80s Earth?

Well, sure, if you want to be all accurate and junk. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well good night all. Have to be up fairly early tomorrow a.m.

Good night!

Good night, Gryper!

Okuda said something in the commentary that I’ve always known but never voiced.

Star Trek spans many genres, action, adventure, romance, comedy, thriller, mystery, horror, fantasy…(and this is me) you can pretty much pick an episode or movie to go with your mood.

For example, when I’m in the mood to laugh I watch this. If I want to cry I watch III or the end of II. VI is a suspense / mystery. They are all great.

Yeah, that makes sense. Deep Space Nine was character-driven.

For me, —even though the characters are a central wonderfulness of Trek—I think my taste for it parallels Gene Roddenberry’s original motivation for creating Star Trek.
He was a fan of the Horatio Hornblower novels which centered around the idea of captain and his ship dealing with difficult problems while too far away out at sea ----too far Britain and the British Admiralty to have anyone tell him what to do, so it was up to the captain to decide what to do.

And once again we perpetuate the “Talos & Thot Separated at Birth” mythos

Yeah, that’s well put. They’re a nice set of sequels because they’re all different. (I suspect you meant to say “VI is a suspense/mystery” not IV.)

You are correct. Fixed with the Edit thing. Thanx. Vulcan Roman numerals!!

Interesting Wikipedia tidbit I just stumbled across:

I always thot this movie was the earliest mention of transparent aluminum in Star Trek. It is, but not the first in sci-fi. That honor goes to…

Battlestar Galactica.

Wouldn’t they just be Romulan numerals?

Really? BSG TOS? Interesting.

Speaking of shows that I should get around to watching

Kim the Trek Tart Trainee reporting for duty…

I didn’t expect to smile and laugh my way through a Trek movie, but I just did. What a romp! I really enjoyed the ride. There were some big questions that kept popping up in my mind as I watched. A slingshot around the sun is time travel? Why didn’t they return to the 23rd century much before the probe almost blew Earth to smitherens? Did they just build one bigsorryBarb transporter room inside the whale tank? But I now attribute this confusion to a moderate case of Treknoobinitis. I’m sure Bones has a pill for that too.

I loved how the story just picks up as soon as they hit the streets of SF. Those moments of navigating the city, the culture and the people were so well done. But there were some precious gems in this film too. This was my first time seeing Spock’s mom & that gave me a huge thrill. I thot “I see what Saarak sees in her” then it dawned on me…why would an unemotional Vulcan attach himself to a human? Surely not for love or the continuation of the species. Another gem was Spock and his dad at the end(can you tell I love me some Spock?) when we see that he has fully come back to himself and advanced even further through this experiece on Earth. Beautiful.

The ending just made me so frakking happy to see everybody back where they’re supposed to be, with Jim at the helm. Seems like we’ve finally come full circle from the end of Trek I until now. Can’t wait to see where we go next, boldly of course.

I can’t recall the specifics, but there was an occasion in TOS where they performed the slingshot maneuver (which is a real way for spaceships to pick up a huge speed boost, BTW) at warp speed, which had an unexpected side effect of sending the ship back in time. Once they figured out how it worked, they commented on using this technique to fix the mistakes of the past – and then never used or mentioned it ever again, at least until this movie.

So glad you’re enjoying these movies. So great to see people learning to love something that I grew up loving. :stuck_out_tongue:

Looking forward to seeing that. Kirk stumbles upon all kinds of unexpected stuff doesn’t he? ( Shore Leave, how to make 2 Kirks).
