Agreed. One of the interesting points (not the most interesting, but certainly worth noting) was that originally the Alice Eve scene was a bit less gratuitous. Originally they were going to be dismantling the torpedo in space, so she would have been changing into a space suit. Budget issues changed it to a planetoid, but that scene stayed in. Still a bit gratuitous, but at least reasonable
'talos, thank you. This reminds me of why the Forum is still valuable: object permanence. You discovered something awesome, shared it here and whether someone finds it four days, four months or four years later it is still valuable and not lost in a Twitter feed, Facebook group or whatever.
I am only halfway through and I am blown away. When Orci says off the cuff, “Rules are meant to be broken, values are not” it took my breath away. That is the core of the movie and an excellent takeaway for real life. Bravo.
My whole issue even before Into Darkness was released was, “Don’t do Khan!” Then they went and did it. Put a real sour taste in my being. Listening to Orci helped alleviate that. The crew @ Mission log addressed all the issue I had with the film. Orci was upfront and unapologetic. I respect that. He helped affirm, this is not your Star Trek. This is nuTrek. I can live with that. This Kirk and Spock and crew have to earn your love and respect. That works for me.
I heard the opposite. As soon as the “budget issue” was mentioned and “open torpedo in space” I called shenanigans! Alice could have still needed to wear a space suit on the planetoid, thus facilitating a realistic need for a “costume change”. I think that whole line was just hollywood PC back pedaling.
This podcast did little to change my opinion of the writer ( typical-hollywood-asshole ). The Kahn issue aside, the story of this flick just wasn’t that good.

Wow. Great article.
I want to live in a universe where at the end of this movie Kirk stayed dead. Better. Movie.
I feel a Hate crime coming on.
After long reflection … the only chance is for the entire JJA crew to line up at my door and kiss my white Irish ass in apology. ( And even then I’d leave it up to a “Saving Throw versus Awesome -5” as to whether I will ever given them one thin dime in recompense for their shoddy cinematic output.)

“Your mileage may vary”
( I’m not here … ask Ferris )
Look … a wookie …
Disagree. I don’t think it would have made a better movie. A better movie is to keep Khan out of it. Cumberpatch’s character should have stayed Harrison. There was absolutely no need for him to be Khan. A better movie would have delved into the underbelly of Starfleet. Have Kirk, Spock, and Harrison uncover the naughty deeds of the Admiralty.
Yeah, they could have easily had Harrison be a Section 31 experiment in genetic enhancement that was disavowed and went rogue or something like that. And rather than having Khan, have one of Admiral Marcus’ senior people be Captain Cartwright (the admiral from Undiscovered Country).
Huh. Of course you are right. With Kirk staying dead, that would have been epic. No magic blood for you!
