Star Trek IMAX a ripoff?

I saw Star trek in a good theatre on opening day. The Big, Dolby digital screen at my local Plex that opening day movies go into. It was pretty cool looking.

We went back the next day with some friends.

Last night me and a date went to the IMAX Star Trek at the local AMC. I can’t tell that the Sound was any better at all, the picture looked the same, and worse the SCREEN WAS THE SAME SIZE! WTF IMAX…i haven’t seen any of the IMAX at the AMC but it is crap! they charge 15.95 for the ticket and it’s the same damn movie expiereience!

Anyone else feel the same as me?

you’re not the only one. Aziz Ansari of Parks & Rec encountered this same issue a while back and was also very upset.

It’s not real IMAX

right… no 90 ft screen. But also no noticeable difference in sound or picture quality.

curious…if you didn’t see it in real IMAX, how could you tell the differnce between sound or pic quality?

now I agree to call it IMAX when it’s not, is a rip-off. But until you see it on a 3 story high screen, etc - I disagree with saying Star trek (or Transformers, etc) in IMAX is a rip off.

I saw the movie three times at the same AMC plex. I am saying there is no diff between the “star trek Imax” expierience at your local AMC and seeing it in the normal dolby theatre in the same very ciniplex. I am saying that there is no added benifit to seeing it in the IMAX unless you go to a real Imax. ( the one at the AMC is Imax in name only evidently)

I am not commenting on the 40 ft tall screen versions of IMAX ( which by the way are now less than 30% if IMAX theatres).

Actually, it is real IMAX. IMAX doesn’t refer to the size of the screen; it refers to the form factor of the film: 70 mm. Standard film is 35 mm by comparison. If your theater was showing Star Trek The IMAX Experience, then they were using IMAX projectors and running 70 mm reels. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be able to use the IMAX name.

For people with keen eyes, it’s possible to discern the difference in resolution between standard films and IMAX films on a standard sized screen. Unless you’re really paying attention and in the front row, though, it’s probably negligible. While it’s true that the full high-res glory of IMAX film doesn’t come out until it’s projected on a massive screen (at which point standard film would look pretty lousy, such as at drive-in theaters), it’s technically still IMAX wherever it’s shown.

As for the sound, that’s entirely dependent on your venue. If your theater doesn’t have a super-fantastic sound system, then you won’t be hearing the full potential of IMAX’s 6-track audio source.
