I also like the idea of the rest of the crew (Chekov as First officer) getting on with their careers and on other ships. I wish they had done that more. Budget restraints of course.

My mom has the same kind of shelving wall-unit thing that Kirk had in his apartment. It was a display case at a store where she used to work. She bought it when they closed down.
I never realized how futuristic is was until now. 
I used to have the litle 3/4 inch metal character figures for all these people.
I used them in the Star Trek Role Playing Game that I Gamemastered for years.
