This episode probably had the lowest budget of the whole series.
I wondered, since most of the bridge crew is missing, and it looks like it is being filmed in a minimalist black box theater
LoL! Only Spock could compare a woman-like creature to a sand bat.
Yeah, even as kid I sensed I was being ripped off a little as viewer.
We may need to use this for this episode:
Psahh! Human females are WAY more dangerous than sand bats.
I’ve totally integrated parts of that command structure into my daily speech, like “deploy captain” and “boldly go”. Good times.
As the episode continues, it definitely feels like I’m watching a play rather than a television show.

You know something. As a child I watched Star Trek constantly. They were on late at night. Sometimes I would sneak outta my room and watch. Other times I would set the VCR timer. My collection of Star Trek episodes were on SLP speed VCR tapes which held 8 episodes a piece.
Anyway, this episode ‘The Empath’ I never saw. I don’t know why. Either I missed it or they never showed it.
When I did finally see it, I was much older. I was at a party, it was 2am. I was drunk and bleary-eyed. I was sitting in my best friend’s dad’s Archie Bunker chair. I looked at the TV and there was Kirk. I was liked, “Wait a tic. What the frak?” I wondered if it was a lost episode or something. This was around the time they were showing ‘The Cage’ and preparing for ‘The Next Generation’. I was in shock. When I woke up the next morning, I thot I dreamt it. I laughed and said, “You’ll never believe the dream I had. I created my own Star Trek episode.” No one listened of course.
Finally, when I was even older. I got my hands on ‘The Star Trek Compendium’. It’s a complete reference guide for the series. I looked and there was ‘The Empath’. My reaction, “Huh.”
