“Really doctor, I had no idea you were trained.
Watching you, I assumed it was trial and error.”

Worshippers of the Son.

Most blatant pro-religious message of TOS. Odd anomaly, this one.

I’ve always thot of it as following the theme of world’s developing Earth-like characteristics, not to mention budget constraints. It reveals the evolution of religion. At first Spock is bemused by Sun worshippers, usually savage, follow a philosophy of peace. People moving from nature worship to a personal relationship with the super-unknown.

I actually think it’s more pro-science than pro-religion, and still true to Roddenberry’s humanist view.

I’m not buying it. My understanding is that the world had developed to be like Rome, not like Earth at the time of Rome. Without a subjugated monotheistic society with requisite messianic prophecies, it’s unlikely that events would work out the same way, at least not without actual supernatural invention.

I always had the sense that this episode was driven more by network meddling.

What if Rome never fell… It would truly be a different world…

A single global superpower, stretching its military might around the world, keeping its populace fed and entertained, so they don’t question the ethics of conquest and the resulting budgetary shortfalls?

Yeah, I wonder what that would be like. :stuck_out_tongue:

The GF enjoys this episode way too much…

by the 21 century a single government running the planet with nothing left to conquer.

How many Mozarts, or picaso’s, or Douglas Adams’ have we lost because of all the wars between then and now?

Interesting pre-show discussion.

almost time to press play!

Whoa?! Have we started? I’m still fondling my tribble.

Shat definitely needs at least a training bra

an earth-like planet

I started at :15 (per tradition)

hahaha

the green has been his color lately, too

It’s never explained why it’s exactly like earth. I remember reading a Trek novel where they go back to this planet (I think) but even there it’s not explained.

us humans be barbarians. and emancipators, I suspect?

Those rocks and that grass look very familiar.

Well, not exactly, considering the two moons in this shot.

I don’t remember the two moons in the sky as they beam down. is this a remastered addition?
