Here’s my cool “The Changeling” story.
So, I dunno, mabye 12 or 14 years ago I co-wrote an article on the topic of Neural Networks/Neural Computing. My co-author wrote most of the main article, while I worked on various sidebars, special photos, etc. blah, blah, blah.
So we decided we wanted something striking and interesting as the opening photo in the article, so I suggested a sci fi artifical intellience machine of some kind, and naturally Nomad from “The Changeling” pop first into my mind.
We asked permission from Paramount to use the above photo, and they were happy to oblidge. They said all we needed to do is give proper credit in the caption regarding the source of the photo, and to send them a couple of the article when it was published–which we did of course.
To enhance the opening page of the article, I also wanted to include a quote from the episode that somehow related (even loosely) to the topic of Neural Computing/Artificial Intelligence. Mind you there was no World Wide Web back then, so I couldn’t just google for lines from the script.
So, I did what was probably one of the funest work-related things I’ve ever had to do: I went home that night, put my copy of Star Trek: The Changeling in my VCR and watched the episode looking for a good quote from the episode to put in the photo caption. I’m having trouble remembering exactly what I ended up using, but I know it was some lines of dialog between Kirk and Nomad.
As I frak this episode tonight, I’m sure it will come back to me.
Awesome story, Thot. That is really cool. Hope you remember the quote.
I’m such a geek. I remember going to party after my 10th HS reunion and I brought the magazine with the article to show off to people. I didn’t care if people thot I was a geek, I was damn proud of it.
Well, you’re OUR geek. We damn proud of you too. And of U2. But for other reasons.
and go!
yay! uhura’s back!
I am also proud of U2.
I used to sing a damn good “With or Without You” back in my karaoke days.
and do I hear the theme of doom? hehehe
Yea! Uhura’s back.
Oh that’s right not a great homecoming. You’ll see.
So great to see her back! She gets a lot of screen time in this ep.
I’m still not seeing what Pike said is different about the Captain’s chair. Looks same to me.
That is OSSIM!!
Oh yeah… (oh, better keep my mouth shut and not spoil)
I must have that magazine article somewhere in my basement.
I never throw out things like that.
I’ll photograph it if I find it.
Pike meant the witness chair in ‘Wolf in the Fold’
Hey, so why is Kirk back with the gold uniform?
Where’s his green V-neck?
Oh. Thanks.:o
I was gonna ask.
Kirk keeps questioning his officers in this episode.
I really would like to see the remastered version of this.
While I might wish that it (and all versions of it) be burned up and never worn again… doo-tee?
