The Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison has long been one of my favorite Sci-Fi series. Its may not be the deep dark sci fi that we have now but it does harken back to the good ole days back when we were exploring the moon and space was a fantastic place that all kids dreamed of. And now its backafter the last book was published ten years ago. I squee with joy!
Bumped for awesomesauce.
It’s been a while (read: longer than a lot of you have been alive) since I read it, so I’d really like the excuse. Before, y’know, I’m dead and all.
Also, it’s pretty funny IIRC.
Harry Harrison was my introduction to real Sci-Fi. I mean technically the first Sci-Fi I read was “My Substitute Teacher is an Alien” But the first Sci Fi i read was “Invasion Earth” by H. Harrison when i was probably about 10 or 11. I fell in love with his works and then really got into Stainless Steel Rat and the first few Bill the Galactic Hero. SSR and B the GH are plenty ok for kids to read but in retrospect much of Harrisons work is really not kid friendly. It saddens me that he has dropped off the radar for many of the sci fi kids these days. You cant really find his books in bookstores anymore. He really should be up there with Heinlen and Asimov.
I used to read TSSR during summer reading contests at the public library. Great stuff, easy reading, good stories. I’m glad to see it back.
Not to pollute this thread, but has anyone read those Perry Rhodan serials that Forrest J. Ackerman had translated and published by ACE all those years ago? They were also fun, easy sci-fi reading, part of my youth I’ll always treasure.
Awesome! I love the Stainless Steel Rat, can’t wait to start my kids on the books. I learned a little Esperanto because of the books, great stuff!
