I just read that there was a different ending for this episode. Moriarty was trying to get off the holodeck. Picard deduces that because the paper left, Moriarty could. Instead, Gene Roddenberry did not wish Picard to lie to Moriarty so they change the ending.
The equation fragments on Moriarty’s chalkboard, surrounding his “sketch” of the Enterprise, include i.e. Ataru over Lum — the two main characters of Rumiko Takahashi’s anime series, Urusei Yatsura.
