Quoted from Memory Alpha:
Maurice Hurley recalled, ““A Matter Of Honor” was just a good idea. It dealt with a social problem. One of the things that the old Star Trek did which the new Star Trek can’t do as well, was make comments on issues…You take a show like “A Matter Of Honor” and say, ‘We’re going to do a little culture swapping,’ so we explore what it must be like to be the only black face in a room of forty white people. That must be kind of tough. That’s what Worf, in a sense, is doing. He’s the only Klingon on a basically Human ship. So we said, ‘Let’s spin it. Let’s put somebody on an all Klingon vessel and see how that works.’ What’s it like to be a fish out of water? What is it like to be the only white face in a meeting in Harlem? That’s got to be a little funny, a little different, a little tense. That’s how that show started, it was a way to look at a contemporary social problem and give it a spin.”
Why would he say new Trek can’t do comments on issues as well? I wonder?
Strange comment. TNG can and did just comment on different issues (issues of the times), as it should.
Obviously because all of the major social problems were already fixed. No more racism or sexism. And if they pretend it doesn’t exist, no more homophobia, either.
Klingon shows are always fun. Even the actors say they love playing Klingons. Hey! I’ve got a new game instead of Cowboys and Indians, Klingons and Federation!
yeah. Imagine being the only straight guy in a room full of the gays. That would make an interesting episode. Better yet, gay Klingons.
Good analogy. The Klingons were basically a subjugated race as well.
Ye gods.
Don’t drop the soap.
Really outrageous that there’s no Star Trek series with a main character that’s gay.
I’ve really been lax lately sharing Star Trek with my daughters. I need to rectify that!! They need to learn to act like Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans.
Riker’s face after meeting Mendon was hilarious.
Uh oh. Attack of the blue shirts.
Welsey, you’re such a bigot.
I really liked this interaction between Riker and Picard, especially the little bit where Picard misses the target and asks Riker to repeat what he said. It’s the little touches that give the scene more life.
I drink for an Uhura glass most nights at dinner, but I’m not making much progress indoctrinating the girls.
He was always making inter-species mistakes. Good thing he didn’t live on Babylon 5. He would have been eaten by his first date.
Yeah, I love the scene.
But I never liked the TNG hand phasers. Not gun-lookin’ enough.
He was on Babylon 5? Did not know that.
I’d like to think that things would different today. Studios are much less antsy about such things these days.
My sister said that nephew is already gravitating toward the geek path, which, of course, she knows nothing about, so it’s up to me to nourish his curiosity.
I’ve got own little padawan. Squeee!
I’m gonna start watching episodes when I get home from work and on the weekends. They’ll catch on. Or leave me alone…le sigh.
