Spoilers

Hi all,
Just going through my usual list of web sites and it raised a question. What is the big deal about “spoilers”? Is it a mean thing to ruin it for everyone else? Is it an “I’m first because I know this and you don’t” thing?
Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s (basically before the internet got into everyone’s home), I lived in Bermuda (from there born and raised). Movie and TV info seemed new when things were announced. Does anybody remember watching the hour long specials that used to show the new lineups from networks?? Hosted by the then popular TV or movie stars??
Today it seems (to me) that most people know 95% of the movie or show before they even see it. “Yeah, it sucked, but I knew that going in… I’m going to the nearest hotspot and blast the crap out of it online…”
Costumes, action scenes, plots, actors, it all seems to be to available months or even a year before something comes out. I like the “little” blurbs from the director or main actor, but I don’t like the leaked blurry photo of say “Bruce Wayne’s grave marker, from the latest Batman movie” (this is totally made up by the way). Neither do I seek these things out.

Spock’s death in ST: TWOK… Wow, didn’t see that coming
Vader is Luke’s Dad … News to me
Leon dies at the end of The Professional… holy crap!!!

The information about these things are leaked/printed/posted/stolen and published just to far in advance for my tastes. Again is this done in a mean sense to spoil it for fans or a rabid fan showing "how much he cares about his/her favorite charactor/book/TV/Movie franchise.

Sorry for the rambling, any one have an opinion on this?

I agree completely. On our show, we won’t spoil anything until a month after it’s on DVD, or for a video game until after we’ve all beaten it (Which is usually at least a month for the good games, and probably 2 or 3). And then, when we are going to spoil something, we ring a bell if it’s a big enough spoiler.

I HATE spoilers, in other words

Sometimes you can’t help it. It’s hard to not assume that everybody knows that Soylent Green is People. If something is 10 years old, it’s generally safe to assume that the knowledge is in the public domain. I still shy away from discussing the twists in Fight Club and the Sixth Sense, though, because if you’ve managed to not know the spoiler this long, I do NOT want to be the one to give it away, because each movie is SO MUCH better not knowing the spoiler.

Anyway, I’m rambling (too) so I’ll cut this short. Spoilers bad. Warnings before giving them good.
