Splash (1984)

Did you ever notice that nobody talks about this movie anymore? That younger people don’t even seem to know it exists? Meanwhile, other 80’s films like The Goonies, The Dark Crystal, and even The Monster Squad have big followings, while Splash is lucky to get maybe one little mention on an 80’s nostalgia site or TV show.

This is a shame, because I consider this to be one of the best movies about a mermaid ever created. Daryl Hannah puts in a fantastic performance, Ron Howard shows his directing muscles, and Tom Hanks holds his own in one of his first major roles. Plus, you get a great comedic performance from the late John Candy.

I’d say that this is a movie that deserves a remake to remind people of its existence, and I don’t say that very often.

See? The lack of responses is proving my point, lol.

I loved Splash and also consider it one of the great 80’s movies. Although it’s funny, I don’t have it on DVD, and I really should. It’s one of those “notice it’s on while channel surfing got to watch the whole thing” movies.

There are more movies about mermaids?

You could say that Splash is sort of a big fish in a small pond.

I thot you wuz gonna say, “A fish out of water story.”

When I saw the thread I was like, “Yeah, Splash is great.” I’ve seen it many, many times as a youngin’. But not recently. It falls into a strange category. Seen it so many times but don’t own it. For me, many films from the 80s fall into that group. Weird, huh?

It was Touchstone’s first movie, they were a branch of Disney. Touchstone allowed Disney to produce movies that were a little more adult, but without soiling the Disney name.

It also launched Toms Hanks movie career, as well as Darryl Hannah’s and of course John Candy. Eugene Levy… maybe not so much, I guess that is what happens when you play a jerk.

Touchstone went on to produce a number of other gems. (get it? Stone…gem… oh never mind)

I guess Tom is always remembered for [U Big[/u], rather than this movie. He did like another 9 Comedies after this movie, he took off like a rocket.

Actually, I just recently heard that Brian Grazer, Ron Howard’s long time partner, and the Producer of Splash, is working on a new film with a similar subject.

This one is about a merman who comes to land, because his mermaid fiancee has left him for a human man. It sounds like it could be very interesting if it’s done just right.

By that, I mean not done like a cutesy tween comedy like Aquamarine was. I haven’t seen that one, but I heard it was awful.

pardon me if I get the quote wrong…

“What are two distinguished scientests doing so far from Sweden?”

Hanks + Candy in one movie? Comedy gold.

Bocce balls!

“Hey Baby. I’ve got a 12 inch penis!”
