I think we should rewatch Spaceballs. It is all the popular sci-fi at the time completly thrown up and twisted, yet awesome like pizza the hut.
oh yeah, the first I saw this it was in fifth grade with a couple friends in like… 1995 or so.
Now I gotta tell a little story. In my country, foreign movies are dubbed, you’ll actually hear Tom Cruise speak German, we call this Synchronisation.
Most of the time, they do an average job at best, sometimes it’s really crappy, most of the jokes and the essence of the original just gets lost in translation.
Anyway, there’s a couple of movies from the 80s and early 90s when the guys who did the German dubbing apparently had a very creative period and they actually ADDED jokes to movies, either to make up for other jokes that would get lost on a German viewer or to just spice it up a little.
Spaceballs is one example, others would be Hot Shots and the Naked Gun series.
Now, I don’t have the Spaceballs DVD, but I have seen both the original and the German version and what little I remember about added jokes is this:
-
in the German version, Lord Helmet is called “Lord Helmchen” - which translates back into something like “Lord Little Helment” or “Lord Cute Little Helmet” and, I think, is a real nice touch
-
at the beginning, when the transporter guy flips these four switches to “beam” the guy over, he says “Loch eins, Loch zwei, Loch drei, Loch Ness” which is just a funny pun (“Loch” meaning hole and being an allusion to asshole) and also, as I understand it, an obscure reference to the Sesame Street (The Count)
-
now, Spaceballs came out in the 80s, right? well, at that point in time, Star Trek was known in Germany as “Raumschiff Enterprise” (Starship Enterprise), so when they did the “well, it works on Star Trek” joke, they dubbed it as “Raumschiff Entenscheiß” - which of course rhymes with Enterprise and means “duckshit.”
-
Colonel Sandurz: nobody over here would have gotten the reference to KFC, so they called him “Sandfurz” in German - “sand-fart”
now, I wish I remembered more about the movie, it’s been an awfully long time since I last saw it.
I so support this idea. It has been a long time since I have seen Spaceballs and I suspect it will hold up pretty well to the test of time.
Oh my what is that coming out of her nose?
SPACEBALLS!!
Oh s%*t there goes the podcast!!
Nice twist to an odd scene
I took issue with spaceballs,
one, I came in 10 min late.
two, I felt it poked too much fun at the all time great movies by Lucas.
three, How does Barf as a name fit in anyway?
other than that - it was funny as hell, but I had to get over the first three items to really enjoy it later in life.
Like anything in sci-fi, it’s easy to explain. For example, you’r visiting a foreign country and the Yu family decides to name their child Fuk. Of course, you find it offensive but they are none the wiser. Same here. On the Mog planet, Barf is as common as John.
Heh. He said “John.”
Ralph (instead of Barf, the Mog) might be just as good i suppose?
King Ralph?
King Ralph Wiggum maybe, hey he was a candidate. Anyways, Since we have ended star wars arc what better than spaceballs.
