Sluggy Freelance is my unusual book choice of the month. Now a lot of you will probably look at it and say “Wait, this isn’t a book!” well firstly, here it is in book form and secondly I think comics count as books.
Sluggy Freelance is the daddy of webcomics, established in 1997 its been running daily for over ten years with only eight updates missed in all, thats well over 3,000 strips. Originally the strip took on the traditional daily strip with a longer sunday strip (such as garfield). The humor is quirky featuring slapstick, observational, parody (specifically a lot of sci fi parody which is why I think a lot of people will like it here) and some of the best puns ever made by man.
However in the later years the strip occasionly moves into that of drama and serial comedies with month to year long stories, whilst retaining a lot of the humor these stretches also tell some great stories. The characters are memorable, the stories are inventive, the comedy is great and once you start reading you’ll quickly realise why this guy has been able to live off the comic for several years.
Highlights include the star trek parody, the matrix parody, any comic featuring bun bun, “emergency pants,”, KZK, 28 geeks later and several others.
So thats my alternative book choice of the month.
