Singer wants to do a big screen Galactica!?!

Maybe because I have such an “I want to do/be” crush on Katee’s Starbuck, I hope a new Starbuck would be a dude. I just can’t have another woman in that role. I mean, seriously:

“Don’t wait for the translation, answer yes or no!”, Adlai Stevenson to the Soviets at the United Nations Security Council

I couldn’t help but think of that famous confrontation (49 years ago almost to the day, weirdy nerdy!) when IGN asked John Orloff straight out.

“I’m not going to confirm nor deny that,” Orloff told us.

Whoomp there it is! Who let the dogs out? Okay, I’ll stop. But Occam’s Razor suggests itself here. It would have been vastly simpler for him to just say, “No.” Leaving the presumption Orloff cannot say no and remain truthful. More importantly really, “But it’s going to be fairly quick. Bryan is hoping that we’re going to get this going pretty fast.”

Props to IGN’s Spidey Sense and great continuing BSG coverage over the years.

IGN: John Orloff Talks Battlestar Galactica: There’s still hope for a Moore-inspired adaptation of Singer’s BSG. 10/24

Comment of the week!: “A hermaphrodite Starbuck is the sensible option to avoid treading over old ground” - JohnnyZero25

Anonymous has slid below 50% in critic reviews (per Rotten Tomatoes), many finding the premise about Shakespeare not writing his own plays a stumbling block to enjoying the movie as a movie. Just as much: the popular pastime of bashing Emmerich for another of his profitable but dodgy movie ideas is also irresistible. Many books have played up the mystery, or lack of information, about Shakespeare, like Bill Bryson’s excellent Shakespeare: The World as Stage. I think in the last few years, the controversy has become the literary version of the Loch Ness Monster in terms of credibility. I just read a book about Late Middle Age history that presented a brief solid case that Shakespeare, as well as any son sent off to school by a prosperous tradesman who could afford it, was taught Latin and Greek over several years. Records show Shakespeare became relatively wealthy as a playwright, fairly early on, and bought a substantial amount of property. This is the opposite of the older portrait of an illiterate peasant Shakespeare that couldn’t sign his own name.

So there’s a lot of bashing:

“Anonymous is a poor piece of storytelling, likely to confuse those who know nothing about Shakespeare and incense those who know anything.” - NPR

“A Shakespeare slam signifying nothing” - Philadelphia Inquirer

tempting John Orloff to come out and defend himself… again? It’s unusual for a screen writer to speak to the daily press, in the span of one week no less, quite this often.

The Atlantic: The Script Writer for ‘Anonymous’ Defends His Controversial Movie

What does this have to do with Universal’s Battlestar movie? I hope nothing! Well, just as with Battlestar, Orloff says he has always wanted to write a Shakespeare story, like, for twenty years. The Atlantic interview is filled with, if not inaccuracies, then absence of evidence equated to proof. He’s right. It is all conjecture, including his.

All this has happened before (but not recently) and its happening again…

CHECKERS GREEN

Variety: ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Movie Gets New Life at Universal (EXCLUSIVE) 4/7/2014 (learning from history, probably should mention the year this time)

Glen Larson: IN. Bryan Singer: OUT. John Orloff: OUT. Dirk Benedict Cameo: POSSIBLE. Will this one get beyond the script stage?: ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA. Variety reporting: confirmatorily encouraging.

well… well.

when singer was talking about directing a bsg movie right after the finale aired, it really did feel like that would encroach on our beloved tv series. But now it’s almost 5 years later… and I’m more of the opinion that a new movie would have no bearing on the series whatsoever. To me a new product can’t “ruin” an old one. So if they put the proper effort into creating a movie, I’ll wish it the best and I’ll see it if it looks good. If it is good, then great! If it’s not, that won’t affect my enjoyment of the 2004 tv show one bit.

Singer is committed to X-Men: Apocalypse until past 2016. Despite his reputation for having many irons in the fire, spinning plates, etc. he’s out. Whatever is happening this go-around is top down studio driven. Big buzz on this today, over 50 write-ups, but only Variety has a source. Undoubtedly someone will ask Jack Paglen about his Battlestar assignment during upcoming Transcendence press junkets. Maybe he’ll enlighten us a little. I’ve read positive testimonials of his trouble shooting writing wizardry dating back to 2010. By those accounts, he’s a razor. We’ll see.

Per Variety: “Universal is ramping up a movie version of the sci-fi franchise “Battlestar Galactica,” aiming to develop the film as a complete reimagining of the story.”

A “reimagining” of the reimagined BSG?

Well, whatever-
Just hope they really do something.

@theaarondouglas starts #reimaginethis yesterday but eventually backs off diplomatically with, “The BSG Universal movie is a genius idea. Whether it turns out a great film or not everyone will pay to see it. Big $$ comin.”

Okay. I give. It HAS been long enough (see first post of thread). I wanna see some Vipers flying again, and the big screen is as good a place as any. I loved the 1st re-imagining. Go ahead and blow us away with another now please. Thank-you.

So say we all !!

THR: Universal Settles Profit Dispute Over ‘Knight Rider,’ ‘Battlestar Galactica’ 12/21

After four years in pre-trial litigation, and thirteen months after Glen Larson’s death, Universal has fully settled with the Larson estate out of court. (Strongly implying Larson’s lawsuit had merit)

I guess it is now okay to repeat the rumors that Bryan Singer and Glenn Larson experienced irreconcilable creative differences after initially meeting in person to discuss Singer’s plans in detail for a feature film. This appears to be why Singer quickly moved on to make the costly box office bomb Jack The Giant Slayer in 2013.

The post-Singer Battlestar project listed Larson as the producer. Scott Bernstein has since left Universal to become an independent producer. Jay Polidoro is still Universal’s director of development and has since been associated with a remake of Scarface and a big budget feature film adaptation of the Atari video game Asteroids. Yes, really. So we’re back to no-names attached to any tentative Battlestar movie. And since the terms of the settlement are sealed, the Larson estate’s continuing ownership and interest in Battlestar Galactica is unknown. But I doubt they will be chasing off Universal’s choice of directors in the future.

The Tracking Board: {EXCLUSIVE} MICHAEL DE LUCA BOARDS UNIVERSAL’S “BATTLESTAR GALACTICA” REBOOT 2/9

Checkers green. Again.

Interesting.
This sounds serious. A reboot from the original.

If this really happens, I sure hope they don’t dumb it down.

I just finished a BSG re-watch and I was again impressed by the writing,
the feeling and depth and humor of the series. One damn excellent series.

Deadline: Exclusive: ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Movie Sets ‘Westworld’s Lisa Joy To Write; Director Francis Lawrence Orbiting 6/9/16

Not to minimize Lisa Joy career as an individual, she is married to Jonathan Nolan, brother of Christopher Nolan. The creative duo are not just the EP’s but the two creators behind HBO’s Westworld. Jonathan wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for the brothers Nolan biggest critical successes: Memento on up to Interstellar and, of course, the finest Batman film ever made in the minds of many, The Dark Knight. Imagine a Baltar on the level of Heath Ledger’s unforgettable Joker. Two years ago, Sony hired Lisa to write a treatment for a Marvel movie with the lead character taken from the Spider-Man universe. Production for the movie is still scheduled for 2017. Spider-Girl?

Director Francis Lawrence has directed the last few Hunger Games movies. Meh.

Anyway, I’ve posted before that to realize actual progress on a Battlestar movie, you need big names attached to open doors, have phone calls returned, and get requests approved by the studio. Formerly that was Bryan Singer. Lisa Joy and Francis Lawrence are equally substantial names to make things happen quickly.

I’m so happy to see the Forum is still active. Bravo!

The more I hear about this Battlestar reboot, the more I want them to walk away. Go. Go focus on the Foundation trilogy that was supposed to happen 2 or 3 years ago. Jonathan was the last person I heard working on that.
