THIS looks good!
Sherlock Holmes an Action Adventure hero? Did they like never read a SH story?
to me Holmes has always been Brain not brawn. I am a little torn… it does look like it could be an entertaining movie. but…
I just don’t need Holmes re-imagined…
I will give it a shot… and try not to be a hater…
My confidence in the film has taken something of a hit with that trailer.
I dunno…I dig it…but I do see folks point about it not being the typical Holmes
Yes, it denfinitely seems to be a re-imagined version of Sherlock Holmes.
And we all know how much we hate all things “re-imagined” around here…
I think it looks pretty cool…
And I admit it was the New BSG and the new Starbuck that taught me not hate first… I will wait and judge this movie on its merit…
Except… the new BSG was a more realistic look at the same events and same general mythos from the original…
This Holmes is a departure from some of the core characteristics that Sir Aurther Conan Doyle was careful to give him.
It looks just like every other movie out there…
Wow, I am surprised no one is talking about this movie. Am I alone for having seen it?
Quick background: I consider myself very well read in the classic Holmeslore. I have gone through the canon a few times and I have gone so far as to visit Baker Street.
I haven’t read any of the critical reviews yet so I can still speak to this movie with my own voice. My best and quickest review would be:
It didn’t suck.
Now, if you are looking for a little more depth I can provide it. Without going into super five paragraph detail the movie had many high points and nothing that really was off. No surprise RDJ played an excellent Holmes mixing a bit of insanity with his brilliance. JL was a perfect Watson, although the gambling habit storyline never paid off and therefore was not needed. Rachel McAdams, well, I will watch anything she is in, period.
The villain was interesting, only slightly approaching cartoonishness. His major flaw was looking a bit too much like a buff Andy Garcia which was distracting everytime he was on screen.
The portrayal of turn of the century London was the real winner of this movie. Just beautifully done.
I imagine many are browbeating this film for not being true to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes in the ring, e.g. I personally found the updates and changes interesting, plausible and true to the spirit of Sherlock. It was interesting to me that they highlighted Holmes analytical skill more in fighting than in criminal deduction.
Overall, good film. The only reason I am dissapointed is that it had all the makings of being an off-the-chart film and it came out simply being a good film.
I heard some local Holmes fans on the local public radio station. They gave it a thumbs up. I’ve yet to see it myself, however.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought he resembled Andy Garcia.
I enjoyed the movie. Robert Downey Jr was great as ever. I’m not a big Sherlock Holmes fan, but I’m sure most people spotted the sequel hook very early. I got a bit of a Greg House vibe from Robert Downey Jr. I know that House was based of Holmes, so it seems to have come full circle
It was nice to read your post Solai because I’ve never read any of the books myself and I left the film wondering what book fans thought. HubAZ, BrettAZ and I were all pretty underwhelmed I must say. I agree that the sets and feel of London were fantastic. I liked the interplay between RDJ and Rachel McAdams, they had good chemistry. Otherwise, I felt like this one could have waited for DVR. I’m probably not very accepting of new films right now because I have new Trek on DVD and it blows me away every single time I see it.
I thought it was the best Guy Ritchie film I’ve seen, and pretty true to the spirit of the books -Watson is usually portrayed on screen as a doddering old man, whereas in the books he’s ex military, a former athlete, and very capable in a fight. What I liked less is the lack of deduction Holmes (well done by Robert Downey jr.) does, except during a couple of fight sequences. That said, almost every adaptation concentrates on the deductive side, so it was refreshing to see some of his eccentricities.
Good film.
