Second Life...

Anyone here use this social network site?

If so, what is your opinion of it?

My teenage daughter asked us if she could get an account on that site. Since she never asked us for Messenger, Facebook or Tweeter, I’m a bit sceptic about this one. Or maybe it’s that she learned her lesson for joining these sites without our consent.

I’ve looked at their site but can’t really grasp the point of all that they offer. Aside from different avatars (with some downright sexy) and exotic locations for meeting rooms, is this site just a fancy open MMO without gameplay? Is it appropriate for a teenage girl?

It’s pretty broad. There’s definitely a lot of adult sort of things, but they tend to be segregated. There’s also a bunch of trekkies, political groups, whatever.

They have a ‘teen grid’ but I’m not really familiar with it (since I haven’t been a teen since before the web was invented.) Wikipedia has some details.

Ask her why she wants to join, and sit in with her on character creation etc. Usually you join because there’s a group you’re interested in that has an SL presence. That should be the focus of your concern.
