Basically, Amanda Tapping’s character runs a sanctuary for mutants, most of whom would be traditionally classified as supernatural creatures.

I saw the recap but I still don’t get it. Are these superhumans, using mythical creature DNA?

Most of the “abnormals” are naturally-occurring mutations. The Five were normal humans who took a treatment based on vampire blood and got superhuman powers and de facto immortality.
