S04E08 - Sine Qua Non Episode Discusion <spoilers>

She said frakking, I’m pretty sure. That was left in there for the US broadcast, so it must’ve been. But she sure made it sound like ‘fu*king’… I had to do a double take on my Tivo.

“Why did you bring me back anyway?”
“War. Genuine civil war.”
“Well, that makes this all the more meaningful.”
Reaches out and snaps Cavil’s throat with one hand.

Awesome.

If Cavil’s face was the last face in this world I saw before I thought I was gonna die forever, and I come back only to see Cavil’s face again, I’d be feeling cranky also.

OK, so I’ve been lurking a bit(over a year now, heh heh), and I came up with my own pick for the final cylon, based on a discussion I had with my wife. With the new rules about Cylons having babies and the fact that whoever the last Cylon is is going to be the major shock, I think we are looking at the Admiral himself. Husker didn’t enter the war until it was almost over, based on what I saw in Razor(extended cut, I think). Adama was the one who came up with the whole Earth idea to get the ball rolling to begin with. With Tigh and Tyrol making babies, Lee and Zac are not a farfetched possibility, as Cylons having babies goes. One last thing, in “Flesh and Bone” Leoben tells Laura that Adama is a Cylon. One thing that has been consistent throughout this series is that hints are dropped relating the identity of the Cylon right up until they are revealed. Yeah, how could Leoben know who is the final five when they programmed themselves not to think about them… All I’m saying is that there are enough clues about the Cylons, new and old, to pretty much lock this one. Besides, I thought Gaeta was our man but that wouldn’t be universally shattering enough of a reveal to cause the combined heads of all BSG viewers to simultaneously explode upon finding out.

Hmmm?

Please elucidate me on the hints that were dropped pointing to Tyrol, Tigh, Anders and Tory being Cylons. For that matter, what hints from Series One were there about Biers or Doral?

It seems to me it was only Boomer for whom there were dropped ‘Cylon identifying’ hints. And they were certainly not obscure or veiled; it was pretty obvious.

I also don’t place much credit in Leoben’s “Adama is a Cylon” statement. At that time in the series I’m certain there was no plan for a ‘Fifth Cylon’ revelation, and Leoben was just doing his usual mind-frakking.

The one thing that the writers have been completely consistent about - and I do not think that they are doing it to mislead viewers - is that the FC is NOT in the Last Supper picture. In any event, Dusty and Rhodes have figured out who the FC is and they don’t even have a TV out there on the range. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me.

All other answers reflect one of the stages of grief - denial.

Are you saying that the last supper REALLY has something to do with this? Hooray for new media and all, but if they really are going that route then my whole theory is absurd.

As for clues, some of the reveals have had more than others. D’anna was snooping at things like oxygen scrubbers on the Galactica, Tyrol had his bad dreams and more than just an affinity for the Temple of the Five, Tori fit the “my history on Caprica doesn’t go back more than 3 years” like was established with Boomer, Col. Tigh had intimate knowledge of Cylon tactics which, at the time, was explained away as wartime experience. Cavell(sp?) came out and flat said he was a Cylon to the chief. Leoben even had a buildup that involved his deteriorating condition in the miniseries, although this fact wan’t made clear to viewers until Adama picked up on it. Granted, some of these things aren’t obvious until you look back after the Cylons are revealed, but that’s what makes the rewatch so valuable. Also, early on, such as with Boomer, Six, Doral, and possibly Simon, the reveal was very sudden, because they just had to get them out there.

It’s like there are rules about who can be a Cylon, and with the Final Five being “fundamentally different” there are new rules coming out. After seeing how Tigh and Chief were sowing their robo-oats around the fleet, I figured it’s a good possibility that meant just about anyone who had a kid could be our man.

The thing is, the picture doesn’t really disprove my whimsy, on account of there are two Six’s in the photo, so there could end up being two of another character when it’s all over with. I’m not sure the picture is really all that relevant, though, it’s not “canon” as far as a broadcast episode is concerned.

I’ll LMAO if Boxy suddenly appeared and said “I’m a Cylon, too!”

But have they really revealed that? Consider what Ron Moore actually says:

“I didn’t really want to give that away.” I think it’s very easy to assume that he did, but did he really? Sounds like one of those classic “neither confirm nor deny” sort of statements to me.

Well - that shoots my theory to hell. Maybe.

Okay, so the going consensus is that the cat was a head cat, therefore I’m taking back one of my complaints about the writing of this episode.

A head cat. Who would have thought about that. I mean, is that a clue or just a funny gimmick?

A head cat. I don’t know how I feel about that. It doesn’t make what they did to Romo and the Lee story any better, but it takes away some of the sharpness with which I attacked this episode.

I still can’t get past him carrying around a dead cat, and yet NO ONE notices? Either that ship just stinks of death all the time, or the children of Kobol have no sense of smell.

He’s Romo- he probably had it stuffed or something. You know, discretely.

Lee said that the cat had been dead for weeks. And he looked horrified.

I’d be pretty horrified if I opened a cat carrier to a taxidermied cat… also, what if they killed it really awfully like breaking its neck or something? Then it would be horrible even stuffed. I don’t know… I’m not being serious.

it’s the drugs

hope you’re feeling better

It might be a reflection on the skill level of the available taxidermists in the fleet. I’m sure it didn’t occur to anyone to make sure they rescued the best and brightest of the Colony’s animal stuffers.

Just jumped in here. I agree with a lot of the criticisms of this episode, but still enjoyed it and am not so bothered by its flaws. I do seem to recall (although I might be hallucinating) that they managed to write seven episodes before the writers’ strike happened. So perhaps the final three (episodes!) of this half of Season 4 were a bit rushed. Hopefully more time was spent on the next two and it’s just this one that suffered from having to be churned out rapidly, or under difficult circumstances. Given the (IMHO) dazzling genius of Episode 7 (nothing less than a work of art, surely), there must be an explanation for this glitch. In any case, I’m sure we’ll get back to form for Season 4.5. But like I said, it still worked for me, although below par (but, yes, the Romo-Lee thing was a bit daft - we all knew what was coming and they made a bit of a meal of this).

Chuck, Audra and Sean - if you’re reading, thanks for playing my calls. I’ll even forgive you for mistaking me for Australian! I have this quite a lot for some reason, even from fellow Brits. But then I am from Norfolk, and we do speak a bit funny in these 'ere parts.

Cheers all…

“A boy’s best friend is his taxidermied cat.”

Lovely, now I can’t get the image of Romo Lampkin as Norman Bates out of my mind…

“We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven’t you?”

shudders

Were there a lot of Norfolkians sent down under?

“Mother! Oh gods! Mother!”

Norman also had a room with a view…

Aaaw, thanks

I am feeling quite a bit better, though I fear it will be a while before I am ready to get up and dance.
