Russell T Davies: Why Torchwood: The New World will DISTURB you

Torchwood: The New World won’t be back until next summer (which can’t get here soon enough), but while we wait for its return, Russell T Davies got our attention by letting us know how the new series will disturb us.

Russell T Davies: Why Torchwood: The New World will DISTURB you

I’m guessing it involves Jack somehow…

Considering that he’s the only character who definitely won’t be dying (at least not permanently), I’d say that’s a safe bet.

Sounds good to me!

Nice. A nice contrast after the fun, light hearted Torchwood: Children of Earth

Seriously though, really looking forward to this. Torchwood was awesome in ways I didn’t expect.

Huge fan of the show. I do think RTD crowbars in the pansexual aspect of Captain Jack too much in Season 2, though. I know he was trying to establish a loving relationship with Ianto leading up to Ianto’s demise, but it never played well, didn’t fit the individual storylines and didn’t help me care about that aspect of Jack or Ianto.

Other than RTD trying a bit too hard to fly that banner of his, the stories are SO well-conceived and written. They generally dig deep at some uncomfortable yet common aspect of life. I really admire the courage and execution of RTD and the other writers to not take the high road and say to the viewer, “Ok, deal with this! Because, you know, it’s out there now!” Compelling stuff.

I’m thankful for all the Torchwood that’s out there (watch it on Netflix while you can!) and I’m REALLY jazzed up about this season, which could easily be the last one.

I always thought the relationship with Ianto felt forced as well. Especially after his cyber-girlfriend died. I felt the unspoken feelings between Jack and Gwen were more in character with the tone of the show. But I also liked the episode where we find out how Jack got his name. I though that one was very well done, and you got a glimpse of Jack you didn’t see much on the show.

I am really looking forward to new episodes, and so glad Gwen and Rhys are going to be back as well!

I think it’s safe to say that Jack will always be the character giving the show that extra kick to keep it alive. He’s the personality of the show.
I am a huge fan of Torchwood, and I always will be, what with the drama, AND ACTING! The last episode of series 2 continues to make me tear up, and the performance given was just astounding. I started watching about a year ago (catching up on netflix, of course), and I’m am cautiously optimistic about the new series. I’m really excited to see how they will approach the new story. They literally have unlimited options as to what direction Jack will take, and what choices he will make. As well as who is to be included in the… I hesitate to say it… new team. Ugh. That gives me shivers. But we’ll see.

HAH!

I miss the old gang, but they’re dead, so I do wonder if they’ll ever have new members in the gang. I love Jack, and I like Gwen, but that’s a whole lot of screentime for just two characters, both of whom can get a bit much when they have too much screentime. Bring on the new members!

Ooooh, that reminds me! Will we see Rhys? I love Rhys.

I’m a little dubious about this. I was disappointed with Children of Earth as a whole. There were some good elements, but I thought continuity kinda went out the window and it didn’t really feel like Torchwood. Granted I may still be bitter that they killed off Ianto, my favourite character, so soon after killing off Tosh and Owen, my other favorite characters.
I think maybe my biggest issue is that I don’t really like Gwen. I don’t mind her if I have the others to watch but the others are all dead. Hopefully the new characters will be as entertaining as the old to make up for it
I am super excited to see Jack again though. I LOVE Jack. SO of course I’ll tune in despite all of my doubts, if only to see what he’ll do next.

Would this be a good time to go back and and jump on at the beginning? I have seen only the random rerun, i never watched in sequence.

I think it would be. Especially is you like Doctor who. I really love the show, despite my stated misgivings and I definitely worth it.

skip season one, or at least fast forward through the childish boinking and random swearing bits in an attempt to be “adult” if you’re not twelve it isn’t big and it isn’t clever, season 2 is excellent and season three if you can spare six hours, look at it in one go.

on the “in case that confused you I do recommend torchwood but season one really did suck” ID

Ah, you noticed that too, that’s what I thought too. The first episode was like a 5 year-olds attempts at acting adult, it’s start with a near-perfect CSI opener only to have Jack acting bitchy about getting pregnant, because he’s gay, oh isn’t it funny. That’s what made it hard for me, it was like what X-Files was always hinting at, it’s compelling when it’s a mystery but when you actually show the aliens growing babies in tubes, then it becomes hokey 50’s sci-fi.

I’m really looking forward to the new season of Torchwood - but I’m a bit scared too. It’s going to be very different I think being set in America and I’m worried about all the high profile American actors they have brought on board…I just hope they don’t ruin it.

RTD panel interview, pretty good one at that:
