Rosylyn: Against women's rights!

Rosylyn get a free pass from all the touchy feely people in the fanbase and she might have made the worse decision ever! First off… let me say the prerequisite that I am not preaching a personal view on abortion… I am just speaking to her making a dictator decision about it.

She outlawed abortion because of HER decision that folks needed to have babies!!! There was no vote, no debate she just said FRACK women’s rights and democracy.! Is that not the most horrific thing that you can imagine realistically!!!

Certain political types get called a religious zealots for not wanting to fund abortion. She signed a presidential decree that made it Illegal! No vote, No debate! How dictator is that!!!

That’s horrific. I guess if a guy gets a little drunk, and she’s dressed that way… she better have that kid. The human race depends on it! I think that is worse than anything Baltar ever did.

Truth is, if you side with Adama and Roslyn you can make an argument that every facist mistake they ever made was for the greater good. Also… same with Gaeta and Zerek, an argument can be made that they are within the realm of democracy and a free people. Neither are wholly right, and neither are inherently evil.

But I have to go with Rosylyn made an evil decision.

My girlfriend said it best to me, she is for Adama and Rosylyn because she likes them. Rosylyn might have destroyed women’s fundamental rights of choice ( the most important real world issue to her), but it doesn’t matter… because she likes her and she is one of the stars of the show. It’s not the Geata show, or the Tom Zarek show… it’s the Apollo, Starbuck, Adama, Baltar, Rosylyn show. They are all on the side that we are supposed to be on.

If religious types declared tomorrow that abortion is illegal because the survival of the human race depends on it we’d have a riot. Who is she to declare that. She is JUST a leader, not a god. Everything that SHE believes is good, isn’t automatically so. ( see Earff) We have the benefit of watching a show and saying… we can see her motivations and why their ok, but her people aren’t.

In her world… there is one of those black market 10 year old girls that is pregnant with a rape-baby that she is going to be forced to have… because the human race needs children! Roslyn’s opinion!!! No vote, no debate!!! I can think of nothing worse than that!

That’s worse than Baltar!

I forget who spoke to this, but there is a certain hierarchy to what the human race needs, and now survival and basic needs trump others. An unwanted pregnancy is still a boon to the fleet. The question is how far-reaching her decision is (I haven’t seen that episode in a long time) - does she unilaterally outlaw abortion, or just a case where someone maybe didn’t want to have the baby? I don’t know if she decided that her rule applied to special cases, like the health of the mother and cases of assault that led to pregnancy.

Your race is fast becoming nothing more than history, and people can help stop it but maybe they’re just not ready to be a parent? Really? There are bigger things here than that.

it was unilateraly outlawed with no rape or incest or health clausesmentioned. ( we might asume they exist, but I wouldn’t since it wasn’t mentioned)

In “The Oath” Dr. Cottell reiterates that it is illegal… but there are ways around that throut the fleet ( secret doctors and cloths hangers I gather from his expression)

My overall point is, who is she to decide that her decision is what’s best. Would we allow George Bush that decision, or Obama, or Roosavelt during the war!

The Nazis had an add campeign where they told the germans that haveing children was the most important thig ever and abortion was illegal ( a serious crime for an Aryan). It was deemed by Hitler be nessessary to their cultural and literal reproductive effort. We are taught in schools, today, that they were wrong for that.

I’m not trying to draw any real-world parallels because I don’t like where that goes. I will say that there is a fine line to walk here for Roslin’s administration, though, because you’re in a double-bind. You can either make it legal and quite literally throw away components of an endangered species’ future and preserve a very basic freedom or you can remove that freedom from families, and women in particular, at the benefit of your species’ future survival.

You know, assuming they survive at all.

If I recall correctly from that episode, Roslin’s stance on abortion throughout her political career was very much pro-choice. She even let the girl they discovered carry out the abortion as planned. While she didn’t like the decision on an ideological level, she was convinced it was best for the fleet. I don’t agree that she was using some dictatorial power to further an agenda.

Still, if you think about it, the decision she made makes a lot of sense. You can’t compare our legal rights in our own world with that of BSG. We’re simply not in their situation. For them, every human life, especially the next generation, is extremely precious and is necessary if they want to keep humanity alive.

In BSG, killing a baby through an abortion is like letting the tap run when you’re dying of thirst.

my point again… who is she to make that serious of a decision. Doesn’t that overstep the scope of her power. Just because she says that she is responsible for the future of the human race… doesn’t make it so.

what says that ANYONE holds that responsibility. Where did their govenment ever grant a person responible for the future of humanity! She likes to say that she is. Just like George Bush claimed every step he took for 8 years was for the greater good. Saying it and believeing it doesn’t make it so.

An further more, her being in favor of womens rights… but not acting accordingly; That’s like being against anti-semitism… but ordering the holocust!

What you said applies IF they were under martial law, but Roslyn continues to say they are under democracy! IF they are, than she is a villain. What legal precedence does she have to be “reponsible for the future of the human race”. That’s a self appointed mantle. Not something defined in the office of the presidency. If she wants to do that…. She would have to suspend their governemt and form another one. She didn’t do that… she plays the double standard. ( I did stealthat from chuck a little bit)

Everything she has done is great…. It she were just honestly a dictator.
