Robocop Statue

So, earlier this week the Mayor of Detroit was soiciting ideas to help the ailing city from his twitter followers. Someone suggested a statue of Robocop (presumably inspired by Philly’s statue of Rocky.) The mayor did not take to the idea.

Well, geeks sure as heck did. Currently there is a web page soliciting donations (via Kickstarter) for the statue. As of now, they’ve raised $12,000 out of a goal of $55,000. Contributions of $100 or more get a t-shirt.

Booyah, citizen!

Yay!

“Despite everything, we live in a great country, and every day, there’s an opportunity out there to do something awesome,” Hottelet, owner of Omni Consumer Products, told the Free Press. “You just have to find it.”

OCP? Huh?

I thought we might have been trolled (not by Pike), but NYT confirms it.

More than 1,600 people agreed to chip in an average of $17 through a Web site, DetroitNeedsRoboCop.com, and half of the target amount was contributed by a San Francisco company that specializes in turning fake consumer products from movies and television shows into reality. Not coincidentally, the company, Omni Consumer Products, shares its name with the villainous conglomerate that tried to turn a dystopian Detroit into Delta City in the 1987 science-fiction film.

Jesus, this is amazing. Finally, something cool in Detroit again!

Where do I send my $17 bucks.
Robocop lives !
